Job Summary 

The School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for a full-time, Assistant Teaching Professor position beginning August 2024 with requirements to be physically present on campus. This is an exciting opportunity to join a large and diverse school that is home to approximately 1,200 students in six program areas: 1) Elementary Education 2) Special Education, 3) Secondary Alternate Route, 4) Higher Education Administration, 5) Educational Administration, and 6) Educational Research. We aim to recruit applicants who will emphasize training to initial licensure candidates in elementary education to become technologically competent, culturally-responsive educators who have an impact on the learning of P-12 students. The School of Education’s Curriculum and Instruction and Elementary Education programs include Bachelors and Masters degrees and include face-to-face, online, and hybrid delivery formats. Qualified applicants will be prepared to contribute to the teaching mission of the School of Education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collaborating with colleagues on program development and enhancement of pre-service and in-service teacher education programs.
  2. Supervising elementary and/or special education practicum experiences and/or internships
  3. Teaching and mentoring students across programs.
  4. Contributing to the mission of the university and profession through service activities.
  5. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

Doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Education, or closely related field with a focus in elementary education (by August 2024). Two (2) or more years of full-time licensed teaching experience with standards-based curriculum in an elementary general education classroom.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver accurate, concise and quality communication (verbal and written) in a timely manner to a diverse population.
  • Experience setting clear performance expectations and provision of meaningful feedback.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with technology use, particularly in the online learning environment. 

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience in an instructional leadership role at the school or district level. Experience with teaching reading, mathematics, or inclusive practices in elementary or special education contexts. Experience that would allow teaching in more than one program area within the school.
