Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description 

The Department of Film and Media Arts within the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University is seeking applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor in Sound Design, starting in August 2025. This is a three-year appointment starting on August 18, 2025, with the possibility of renewal based on exceptional performance and institutional need.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in our Film program, bringing their sound design expertise and industry knowledge directly into the classroom.

The Department of Film and Media Arts is a leading academic center for the education of media artists and professionals. Our programs offer students valuable studio experiences in well-equipped facilities, complemented by rigorous academic studies and comprehensive courses covering media arts history, diverse theory, and contemporary issues.

  • Qualifications
  • MFA in Film, Film and Media Arts, Sound Design, Sound Recording, Sound Art, Sonic Art, or a related discipline. Advanced degree holders and those with equivalent professional experience are encouraged to apply.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in the field.
  • At least 3 years of teaching experience.
  • Job Specific Qualifications
  • Relevant record of creative activity in the field.
  • Robust exhibition record
  • Demonstrated experience in sound design with strong audio arts skills.
  • Outstanding storytelling skills.
  • Experience teaching experience in audio fundamentals, sound design, recording techniques, sound mixing and/or audio-postproduction courses, and a thorough understanding of both independent and mainstream film production processes.
  • Additional experience and knowledge of some other aspects of media production such as producing, directing, screenwriting, editing, postproduction, etc. are preferred but not required
  • Thorough understanding of film production process both independent and in the industry.

ResponsibilitiesSuccessful candidate will fully participate in the life of the department and program and contribute to our educational mission. The candidate will bring their filmmaking expertise and industry knowledge directly into the classroom. The current teaching load is 4/4, and is generally split between (80%) teaching, (20%) service, which includes participating in departmental meetings and fulfilling assigned duties. There may be opportunities to reduce the teaching load pending assignments and enrollment.

Physical Requirements 

Tools/Equipment 

  • Knowledge of Pro Tools and Apple Logic Pro required. Davinci Resolve Fairlight preferred.
  • Knowledge of current technologies and techniques in audio production and recording.
  • Experience with Dolby Atmos preferred.
