Job Description
Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies (the iSchool, ischool.syr.edu) invites applications to fill one open faculty position in the area of Data Science (DS) with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor starting Fall 2025 with an initial contract of 3 years. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong interest and ability in teaching in our Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree programs.
We are looking for a creative, engaging, and innovative colleague who will contribute their knowledge and experience with AI to complement and advance the iSchool’s reputation as a leader in AI (as well as data science, information science, librarianship, information management, online communities, and futures of work).
The focus of the position is to be an engaging and effective instructor, leading courses in both face-to-face and – possibly – online environments, for both our graduate and undergraduate programs. Teaching faculty will participate in service and are welcome to conduct research beyond their required instructional commitments.
QualificationsA masters’ degree in a relevant-to-data science/AI field is required. Applicants with Doctorates are welcomed.
Job Specific QualificationsCandidates with instructional experience are preferred.
Candidates with professional experience that involve working with AI systems or in data science are preferred.
We welcome a variety of specializations including, but not limited to, experience in working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and their iAPIs (such as OpenAI), machine learning, deep learning, AI ethics, developing AI applications, and AI-driven decision-making systems.
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities of the position include teaching four courses per semester – for a total of eight per academic year – at the undergraduate and graduate level in person – and possibly – online; mentoring students; and, engaging in service. Participating in research can be negotiated.
Physical Requirements
The position requires regular attendance, managing a multi-course workload to include attending class, grading, holding office hours, preparing syllabi and course materials and managing course materials in a learning management system, interacting with students in a timely manner, working with program and school leadership, meeting deadlines, and being able to get oneself to the classroom.
