The Department of Biology at the University of Washington (UW), Seattle, invites applications for two full-time (9-month) Assistant Teaching Professors in Biology, starting no earlier than September 16, 2024. The initial appointment is for three years, with the possibility of renewal. The positions are non-tenure eligible. Successful candidates are expected to contribute to teaching efforts in any area of Biology.

The UW Department of Biology is a large collaborative and integrative department that provides a supportive research and teaching environment, actively engages with faculty and students on topics of diversity and equity, and now is equipped with teaching laboratories and classrooms designed for active learning in the new Life Sciences Building. The UW Department of Biology is also a nationwide leader in biology education research, integrated with a broad biological research and teaching program stretching from molecules to ecosystems.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach large-classroom introductory courses, as well as upper division courses, including laboratory courses. Washington State Law requires that this ad list a binding salary range. The base salary range for this position will be $7,277 – $8,700 per month on a 9-month basis ($65,493 – $78,300 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a doctorate, or foreign equivalent, in the biological sciences or a related field by the date of appointment.

Applicants must have at least one year of teaching experience in the life sciences.

1) Two brief statements (<200 words each) summarizing (1) your past teaching accomplishments and (2) how your teaching will broaden diversity and access in biology education. 

2) A merged PDF with:

Cover letter describing why you are interested in joining the UW Department of Biology and how your academic background and experience fit with the department’s teaching mission.

Curriculum Vitae, including your full publication list and teaching experience.

Teaching statement describing your teaching philosophy and specific plans for contributing to the educational mission of the UW Biology Department (maximum 2 pages).

A Diversity Statement that explains how you have promoted equity and diversity in the past, and how your teaching will broaden diversity in, and access to biology education (maximum 1 page).

3) A publicly accessible link to a ten-minute video demonstrating best teaching practices in an area of biology.

4) The names and email addresses of three references who will provide letters of recommendation upon request.
