The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at the University of Rhode Island anticipates an opening for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Chinese to start in the Fall semester of 2024. Position is full-time academic year, with anticipated renewal. Teaching and other workload assignments will be decided by the Chinese Section Head in consultation with the Department Chair, and Chinese Flagship Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teach Chinese language courses at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Teach in the Chinese Language Flagship Program as needed. The position also requires some administrative work for the Chinese Section and participating in program-related activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

1. Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area, such as teaching Chinese as a foreign language, Chinese Literature, Applied Linguistics, or Chinese Linguistics.

2. Native or near-native proficiency in Chinese and English.

3. Minimum of two years of prior experience teaching Chinese at the university level in the United States.

4. Demonstrated experience in proficiency-oriented and task-based teaching and assessment.

5. Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups/populations.

6. Demonstrated interest in program development.

7. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

8. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

PREFERRED:

1. Ph.D or ABD in a relevant area, such as teaching Chinese as a foreign language, Chinese Literature, Applied Linguistics, or Chinese Linguistics.

2. Demonstrated experience organizing and preparing students for standardized tests such as OPI, OPlc, LTI listening and reading comprehension tests.

3. Demonstrated excellence with content-based and project-based instruction.

4. Demonstrated excellence with blended teaching and learning, and using modern technology in language instruction.

5. Prior experience teaching in an intensive immersion program or Chinese Language Flagship Program.

6. Commitment to participate in the departmental Proficiency and Intercultural communicative competence (ICC) initiatives.

7. Familiarity with linguistic and cultural preparation for study abroad programs.

8. Willingness to conduct K-12 outreach in the United States.

9. Prior completion of a four-day full OPI training workshop is a plus.
