Situated on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territory of the dxʷdəwʔabš (Duwamish people), the College of Education at The University of Washington, Seattle, seeks an Assistant Teaching Professor in the area of Multilingual Education, to positively impact the racial, ethnic and linguistic diversity of the educator workforce in the region to more authentically match the K-12 students we serve, and to prepare for the expansion of Washington’s Dual Language Education programs statewide. The position will carry the non-tenure rank of Assistant Teaching Professor and is a three-year, 9-month position at 100% FTE. Renewal of this appointment will be considered in the second year. The base salary range for this position will be $8,050 – $8,620 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a relocation incentive and a limited commitment of summer salary based on curricular need and available funding.
The COE Multilingual Education Assistant Teaching Professor will provide high-quality Bilingual, World Languages, and English Language Learner (ELL) instruction to teacher candidates within five Teacher Education pathways and undergraduate studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a variety of methods and theory-based courses including courses that support the bilingual endorsement such as: Teaching World Language I and II, Bilingualism and Biliteracy in Multilingual Classrooms, Immigration and Schooling. The successful candidate will also work with Teacher Education leadership to expand the number of outstanding, highly qualified bi/multilingually endorsed teachers with particular attention on recruiting candidates who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and/or multilingual speakers.

The Multilingual Education Assistant Teaching Professor will act as the liaison between the university and community stakeholders, lead statewide efforts related to multilingual education, and establish networks with national/ professional organizations focused on multilingual education.
The Multilingual Education Assistant Teaching Professor will work in partnership with the Teacher Education Program (TEP) Directors and instructional teams (across five Teacher Education pathways) to ensure that teacher candidates seeking the Bilingual or ELL endorsements experience comprehensive preparation as multilingual educators both in coursework and in field placements. Our Teacher Education Program is committed to diversifying the educator workforce, with over half of the candidates in our programs from racially and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Additionally, our teaching, research, and community collaborations demonstrate our commitment to the preparation of racially, linguistically, and intersectionally just teachers through innovative practices such as identity caucusing. This position will advance the college’s racial and intersectional justice goals, including upholding our college’s commitment to remaining accountable and answerable to local and state Indigenous communities as well as Black, disability, multilingual, immigrant, and other multiply-marginalized communities throughout Washington State.

The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate or foreign equivalent in a relevant field or discipline by the date of the appointment, such as, but not limited to, curriculum and instruction, bilingual education; language, literacy, and culture; or teacher education, to include university-level coursework in bilingual education and/or instruction of English as an additional language (e.g. TESOL), and at least three years’ experience as a bilingual language teacher, ELL teacher, world language teacher, or teacher of Multilingual students in K-12 schools.
