The Department of Asian Languages & Literature in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington seeks to appoint a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor of Vietnamese. The initial appointment, starting Autumn Quarter 2025, is for three years, with the possibility of renewal. The successful applicant will be expected to teach Vietnamese language courses at all levels, with the possibility of teaching courses in Vietnamese literature, linguistics, or culture. In addition, they will develop curricular and teaching materials, conduct placement tests, occasionally train and supervise teaching assistants, and perform departmental committee service.

The Seattle region has a vibrant and growing Southeast Asian community with multiple cultural events. The University of Washington has a Title VI funded Center for Southeast Asia & Its Diasporas (CSEAD) that sponsors faculty activity and travel. The Department of Asian Languages and Literature offers minors in Southeast Asian languages. Teaching professors engage in teaching, service, and, optionally, research. They are voting members of the faculty and have a career path that includes the ranks of Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor. This position is non-tenure-track and the university employment is for a 9-month (mid-September through mid-June) service period. When eligible, teaching Professors can apply for sabbatical leave.

Washington State Law requires that this ad list a binding salary range. The base salary range for this position will be $7,200 – $8,400 per month on a 9-month basis ($64,800 – $75,600 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

By the start of the appointment, applicants must have at least an M.A. (or foreign equivalent degree) in Vietnamese language or literature, second language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or other related areas. Also required are native or near-native proficiency in Vietnamese, fluency in English, and at least one year of experience teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language at the US college or university level (or equivalent system abroad).
