This involves collaborating with individual educators, curricular units, and other university and community stakeholders to ensure that engagement opportunities both have the appropriate infrastructural support, that those engaging in them have the professional development to be stewards of our philosophy and ethics, and that we conduct assessment to methodically understand and improve our engaged teaching and research efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Develop implementation plans for the vision, goals, and priorities of community-engaged teaching & research.
  • Coordinate the University-wide Community-Engaged Teaching & Research Advisory Board (with support from the CETR Program Manager) and its requisite subcommittees, ensuring representation from each academic College as well as key collaborative units across campus.
  • Develop and actualize a program plan for continued growth and depth of teaching and research support in alignment with the University academic plan and Office of the Chancellor/Education Innovation goals and measures, increasing on an annual basis the number of faculty/academic departments, network campuses, and community partner organizations for whom we catalyze and support collaboration.
  • Identify, maintain, and expand beyond our current support of 50-60 course sections and their associated partnerships per semester and appropriately develop, adapt, and evolve the resources provided for community-engaged teaching & research with key administrators, offices, and partners at our institution and in the community to do so.
  • In partnership with the Director of CETR, report on progress of community-engaged teaching & research to the Office of the Chancellor and as-needed to other campus units and governing boards.
  • Develop and implement strategies to document and assess student learning, community outcomes, and contribute to an institutional narrative of community engagement and in support of accreditation efforts, as appropriate.
  • Promote ethical community engagement across Northeastern and advocate for an institutional approach to community engagement through participation in open forums, strategic planning committees, and active relationship building across the University network.
  • With the partnership of the Director of CETR, implement the operations and procedures of community-engaged teaching & research alongside the Assistant Director and Program Manager
  • Develop and maintain relationships with on- and off-campus partners and facilitate mutually beneficial connections between community partners, students, staff, and faculty- impacting up to 1,000 students per semester through integrated engaged coursework, leadership roles, and research opportunities.
  • Support, cultivate, and maintain meaningful collaborations with community partners that align with Northeastern’s curriculum, student learning, and research goals while addressing community-identified interests.
  • Advise, train and support up to 50-75 faculty members per semester on curriculum development and best practices of partnerships, integration, reflection, etc. through active programming and consultation.
  • Collaborate with others on campus (CATLR, the Archives, the Social Impact Lab, etc.) to institute pedagogical and organizational practices centered on raising students’ and faculty members’ awareness of the practical and ethical risks inherent in community-based academic pursuits and prepare them to mitigate these risks while optimizing the benefits of rigorous learning in and with community.
  • Design, facilitate, and/or provide oversight for faculty development opportunities and resources that engage part-time, adjunct, and tenured faculty members to ensure community-engaged teaching and research experiences are in alignment with current and emerging scholarship, community-identified goals, and the university academic plan.
  • Collaborate with the CETR Program Manager and the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research to facilitate a year-long Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program which results in 5-8 new highly integrated service-learning courses with a focus on social justice and equity.
  • Provide content oversight for our Faculty and Community Partner Resource websites, trainings, toolkits, and other online resources to support service-learning courses, ethical community-engaged research, and transformational community-campus partnerships that are in alignment with the university’s mission and values, community-identified goals, curriculum development, and critical scholarship in the field.
  • Cultivate relationships with national and international networks of community engagement practitioners and scholars, including through participation in and active contributions to national conferences, publications, and organizations.
  • Supervise, support, and provide professional development opportunities for the Assistant Director and Program Manager of Community-Engaged Teaching & Research.
  • Provide support to the Assistant Director as they oversee and implement the Community-Engaged Teaching & Research student leadership programs (through which 30-60 students are employed each semester).
  • Provide regular feedback to the Assistant Director and Program Manager about performance and opportunities for growth.
  • Work with the Director of CETR and others to move forward multi-unit, campus-wide initiatives such as (but not limited to) the Community Advisory Board, a community engagement database, community impact evaluation, and economic development opportunities as they relate to community-engaged teaching & research.
  • Collaborate with network campuses and offices on the Boston campus, such as the Global Experience Office, to share and adapt structures and ensure representation of ethical community-based learning principles in their programming particularly as it pertains to building and sustaining partnerships.
  • Oversee buildout of CETR on network campuses
  • Attend and support events and programming within Education Innovation and the Chancellor’s Office to monitor alignment of CETR goals and programs to EI and Chancellor priorities; advocate for community voice and impact within broader EI programs and priorities; connect Community Partners to other EI and university functions that best serve their goals.
  • Meet regularly with the Director of CETR to get insights from the EI Director team meetings and provide regular updates about CETR progress as required.
