Associate Professor of Clinical Practice – Trauma, Burn and Critical Care Surgery

The University of Washington (UW), Department of Surgery is currently recruiting a part-time position (0.55 FTE) at the Associate Professor rank, on the Clinical Practice Track. Specific rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as generally described in UW’s Faculty Code Section 24-34. The anticipated start date will be in Fall 2024.

In addition to clinical work, teaching, scholarship, and service are integral to all Clinical Practice positions. The initial appointment period will be three years, at a minimum, with eligibility for renewal thereafter. Faculty on the clinical practice track hold multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. Clinical Practice track appointments are not eligible for tenure.

Harborview Medical Center is the only Level I (regional) Trauma Center serving approximately 8 million people in the states of Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Harborview’s Level 1 Adult & Pediatric Trauma Center cares for emergency surgical and trauma patients and is closely linked to the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) and to the Surgical Outcomes Research Center (SORCE) at the University of Washington.

Clinical activities will include trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care working as a member of the Division of Trauma, Burn and Critical Care Surgery.

This position will cover one of three general surgery acute care services for 16 weeks per year. When on service, the faculty member will be required to round daily with the advanced practice provider (APP), supervise wound care, and manage any operations required for these patients. This faculty member will also serve as a backup for the trauma attending. In addition to general surgery service coverage, this position will cover at least two weeks in the trauma intensive care unit (TICU), one to two nights of call per month on the trauma service. This position will participate in Harborview Medical Center’s Capacity Management Leadership Committee, and s/he will have 5% protected time to develop and participate in academic endeavors within the Division and Department of Surgery. 

University of Washington clinical faculty are also expected to engage in teaching of Advanced Practice Providers, residents, fellows, and medical students rotating on the clinical services.

Compensation

The 1.0 FTE base salary range for the position is: $35,000 – $36,430 per month ($420,000 – $437,160 annualized); at 0.55 FTE, the base salary will pro-rate to $19,250 – $20,037 per month ($231,000 – $240,444 annualized). Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have an MD or DO (or foreign equivalent). Required qualifications also include general surgery residency training, and board certification or eligibility to achieve certification by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care (or foreign equivalent) by the start date of employment. Must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Washington.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
