JOB TITLE:

Assistant Professor.

JOB PURPOSE:

The English Department at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-line assistant professor, with a desired specialization in indigenous studies and secondary expertise or experience in the public humanities, broadly defined. This is a nine month fully-benefitted position where the successful candidate will pursue a research agenda and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in indigenous literature and culture, as well as contribute to our new PhD program in the public humanities. The appointment begins August 19, 2025. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The English Department is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, with divisions in the arts, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences. The department is home to internationally recognized scholars and award-winning teachers and offers an undergraduate major with tracks in literary and English studies and minors in professional writing, creative writing, and literary studies. On the graduate level, we offer three MA tracks in literature; rhetoric, composition, and writing studies; and the public humanities; an MFA in creative writing; and beginning this year a PhD in the public humanities (read more about it here). Students who pursue our degrees are prepared for a wide range of careers in K-12 and higher education, communication, non-profit work, business, law, marketing, cultural tourism, and many other fields. Our graduates are ready to participate in a rapidly changing world where reading, writing, and critical analysis help them succeed in whatever career they choose.

The University of Wyoming was founded in 1886 and is a nationally recognized land-grant research institution with expert faculty, top-ranked academics, and world-class facilities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties are to pursue an appropriate research agenda and develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in indigenous studies, the public humanities, and other fields tied to the applicant’s areas of expertise, as well as to direct graduate student research. The typical tenure-track teaching load is five courses per academic year with opportunities for course release when directing multiple theses and/or dissertations or taking on other kinds of significant department service.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

Other duties entail supporting the department in standing up a new PhD program in the public humanities, which includes the development of a statewide storytelling initiative sponsored by the Mellon Foundation; the cultivation of public humanities graduate internships across Wyoming and the region; and the recruitment of future PhD students. The successful candidate can expect to be actively involved in department service related to our evolving public humanities initiatives.
