Job description

As the Band 6 Nurse, you will act as a clinical and educational resource to colleagues, Civilian Medical Practitioners and Medical Officers and patients from both the regular and volunteer reserve forces (VRF).

Under supervision of medical officers/civilian medical practitioners within the practice, you will deliver care within the boundaries and scope of practice in line with the competencies expected of a Band 6 National Health Service (NHS) Practice Nurse as outlined by Royal College of Nursing Key Success Factors (RCN KSF). The primary focus is on occupationally focused primary care including supporting occupational grading, force preparation and demobilisation, and health surveillance for a local population of regular personnel as well as providing support to VRF personnel across the region.

Person specification

The successful candidate will have significant experience as a primary care nurse including the management of minor illness and supporting the management of chronic disease. Experience in travel medicine and/or occupational health would be an advantage.

Duties of the role will include but not be limited to:

• Planning and co-coordinating care for individuals and groups based on Joint Defence policies, single Service (sS) policies and Force Health Protection Instructions.
• Supporting clinics to medical centres in the Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC) Region as requested by the Practice Manager where clinical need and facilities allow, balancing workload against patient need, ensuring effective management of clinical time.
• Receiving, evaluating, and advising on requests for occupationally focused healthcare from members of the VRF and Reserve Unit chains of command.

Providing direct care to include:

• Planning and delivering vaccinations.
• A range of procedures including audiometry, venepuncture, BP management, urinalysis, blood glucose testing, peak flow technique, spirometry, pregnancy testing, cervical screening, wound management, taking swabs.

Licences

Registered General Nurse.

Registration with relevant professional body: you are expected to have the skills required to work as a registered professional and adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
