This programme offers the chance to undertake a substantial piece of work that is worthy of publication and which makes an original contribution to the fields of neuroaesthetics and psychological and behavioural science in the BRAINS Lab at Kingston University.

Neuroaesthetics, a field at the intersection of neuroscience and aesthetics, provides insight into how engagement with the arts influences brain function and behaviour. This PhD programme aims to explore how active participation in creative activities affects human behaviour in various contexts such as work (e.g., in relation to work performance, engagement, and wellbeing at work) and/or society at large (e.g., in relation to climate change and sustainability). By understanding the neural, cognitive, and emotional correlates of aesthetic activities and experiences and their impact on cognitive and emotional processes relevant to human behaviour, this programme of research will offer novel, data-driven insights into how artistic practice can foster sustainable human behaviour, human flourishing and climate mitigation.

Example of research questions

  1. How does engagement in artistic activities influence cognition in the workplace (e.g., creativity and innovation, problem-solving)?
  2. What are the effects of participation in arts on the mental health and well-being of employees?
  3. How does neuroaesthetic engagement foster a sense of connection with others and the environment in the workplace and beyond?
