Position description
Boston College welcomes applications for the position of Burns Visiting Scholar in Irish Studies for the calendar years 2026-2028. Residencies may be held for one semester, or, in rarer cases, for an entire academic year. Appointments are available to established academics, writers, artists, journalists, and notable public figures who have made substantial contributions to the understanding of Irish identities, societies, and cultures, and whose ongoing work would benefit from a residency at Boston College.
Further information about the Burns Visiting Scholar program and previous scholars is available at:https://libguides.bc.edu/burnsscholars
Queries can be directed to Professor Guy Beiner, Sullivan Chair of Irish Studies: [email protected]
The selection committee encourages applications from a range of interdisciplinary perspectives and practices, including, but not limited to, history, literature, politics and political science, communications and media studies, folklore, music, environmental humanities, immigration and diaspora, creative writing, and the visual and performing arts.
Candidates must be eligible to hold J-1 visas or hold US citizenship. Burns Scholars are provided with a stipend, health insurance, and lodging. During their residency, they are invited to offer a public lecture and are asked to engage with students by offering a course, or an alternative contribution, to the university’s Irish Studies program.
