The Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary (UofC) in Alberta, Canada, are seeking applicants for a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Data Integration and Information Visualization in Digital Health. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Faculty of Science. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2025, or mutually agreed upon date.

Data visualization and its integration across a range of healthcare applications is key for citizens, health and service providers, researchers, and policymakers to guide and support their decision-making and planning. Thus, the CRC provides a focal point to realize the potential of personalized health, to track and predict geographic distribution of illness and service deficits, improve health literacy, promote and implement effective health interventions, and, by following health need trends, to evaluate and implement efficient interventions matching resources to community and health care needs.

The proposed Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Data Integration and Information Visualization in Digital Health would:
1. Conduct applied research to produce methods, strategies and tools designed to synthesize growing volumes of historical and real time data into intuitive visual displays to help citizens, health and service providers, and policymakers make informed health decisions.
2. Mobilize diverse yet targeted research, education, and clinical voices and experiences to support the use of data visualization to transform UCalgary and its health system and community partners into digital health leaders.
3. Lead collaborations to inform the development, implementation, evaluation, and scaling of programs and knowledge engagement strategies to advance data visualization as a mechanism to support health system transformation.
4. Build capacity for transdisciplinary research by engaging scholars across academia, health system partners (e.g., Alberta Health Services (AHS)), industry (e.g., local technology start-up companies), and community organizations (e.g., non-governmental organizations (NGO)) to address the needs of diverse populations.
UCalgary and its health system partners strive to become a learning laboratory that leverages and enables ever growing amounts of data to inform health and well-being decision-making with direct impact on policy and practice systems in need of urgent innovation. We would serve as a working model of learning health systems for other post-graduate institutions and health organizations.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenure-track member of the Faculty of Science in accordance with University policies, based on a recommendation from the Dean, Faculty of Science. The appointment will be at the rank of assistant professor.

In accordance with the regulations set for Tier II Canada Research Chairs (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.aspx), the candidate will be an outstanding researcher who has demonstrated research success with international recognition in the areas of ‘big data’ collection and analytics, as well as data visualization and its integration across a range of healthcare applications.

The candidate will be required to conduct research at the nexus between data science and digital health. Relevant areas of strategic priority at the UofC include “Digital Worlds” and “One Health”. The research will also be aligned with aspects of the Faculty of Science’s Grand Challenges: “Unlocking Our Digital Future”, and “Personalized Health at the Molecular Level”.

Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in research evidenced by:
• a strong publication record of high-impact publications in prominent journals, and/or a strong record in alternative, non-traditional outputs such as (but not limited to): community outreach (popular press, public or online seminars, scientific social media), and resource development (online databases, protocols, software tools). Applicants may provide evidence of research impact and translation.
• demonstrated ability to obtain research support from a variety of sources,
• an excellent track record in supervision, mentorship, and placement of a diverse team of highly qualified personnel (HQP).

The CRC Tier II funding is for a five-year, renewable term. Chair candidates will be required to have a PhD and academic qualifications that commensurate with an appointment at the rank of assistant professor and an internationally distinguished research and teaching record. Candidates must have the necessary credentials to deliver on the mission of the Chair to lead a novel and innovative research program.

Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank requires demonstrated evidence of a track record of impactful publications dissemination in high-impact venues, such as peer reviewed journals papers or top-ranked conferences, prior experience in working with external funding programs, and effectiveness in teaching and graduate student supervision at the University level.

Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Research interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., closures) are recognized as, and may be counted as, an eligible delay (credited at twice the amount of time) beginning March 1, 2020.
