Job Summary:

The nurse practitioner functions as an independent care provider in collaboration with the medical/surgical staff/ collaborating surgeon. Their advance practice is characterized by comprehensive health assessments and management of patients with acute and/or chronic health problems in the peri-operative cardiothoracic surgery setting. Obtain patient histories and perform physical examination. Perform surgical consultations for per-operative patients, manage patients post-operatively in the CTICU as well as CT Step-Down units. Write admitting orders, routine orders and daily progress notes as indicated. Optimize pre-op patients prior to surgical intervention. Assess and manage pre- and post-operative conditions as well as common health problems. Order and evaluate pertinent diagnostic tests including but not limited to: Radiology, laboratories, echocardiograms and ECG s. Prescribe pharmacological agents and non-pharmacological treatments for appropriate medical conditions. Ensure core measures are followed. Educate patients and/or families regarding disease process, medical and surgical intervention, health promotion and post-operative management. Refers and communicates pertinent abnormalities to the surgical director/medical specialist. Serves as a resource for nursing and ancillary staff in regard to patient and disease management. Facilitate practices that are in compliance with PRO-NJ and JCAHO requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the state or New Jersey. Certified Nurse Practitioner in the state of New Jersey. Masters prepared in Nursing from an accredited program, ACLS certified. Certified Physician Assistant in the State of New Jersey, Masters prepared from an accredited program.
  • Minimum two years of experience in cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology or general cardiology. Cardiothoracic surgery experience preferred.
  • Responsibilities include: Consultations, optimizing patients prior to surgery in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, managing patients post-operatively in the CTICU as well as CT Step-Down units, managing post-op complications, coordinating with multi-disciplinary team and nursing staff to provide patients an optimal pre- and post-operative experience, discharging patients in a safe and satisfactory manner.

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Shift: 7A-7P,
  • 3 days weekly,
  • Rotating weekends and holiday coverage

Essential Functions:

  • Identifies appropriate patient for NP coverage.
  • Performs daily rounds. Discusses plan of care with MD s and multidisciplinary team.
  • Evaluates pertinent diagnostic tests (including radiology, laboratory, ECG, echo, cardiac cath report) in accordance with NP protocol.
  • Communicates with MD regarding pertinent abnormalities. Facilitates compliance of PRO-NJ requirements.
  • Writes orders for pharmacologic agents/non-pharmacologic treatments (i.e. patient education, labs, etc.) for appropriate medical conditions.
  • Completes daily progress notes/discharge sheet in accordance with PRO-NJ requirements.
  • Assesses and manages health problems occurring during hospitalization per NP protocol.
