JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION

The role of the Adult and Family Education ESL Instructor is to provide classroom instruction to adults learning English. The teacher provides whole group instruction in English to adult learners who are multicultural and multilingual. Though most classes are leveled, the instructor should plan for and anticipate a wide range of levels considering speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Differentiating instruction for adult learners is essential in this role. Lesson planning using standards, objectives, benchmarks, and progress monitoring is expected utilizing resources and curriculum designed for adult learners. This teaching role requires a collaboration with team members. Teachers meet to support each other with vertical and horizontal alignment. Teachers meet in Professional Learning Communities, Department Meetings, and Professional Development. Vital to this role are personal qualities which are appropriate for a professional teacher such as: maintains professional ethics and confidentiality, is open to learning from others, has a growth mindset and is a positive role model for students (e.g. is consistent, fair, dependable, responsible, and respectful).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Knows and implements instructional content standards and benchmarks (goals and objectives).

Provides effective instructional strategies and activities for all students in the classroom. 

Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the principal or designated school leader.

Encourages students to set goals and maintain standards of appropriate classroom behavior.

Plans for a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the adult students.

Assesses the growth and accomplishments of students and provides reports on progress.

Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy, and Grant assurances utilizing online data systems.

Participates in all Department Meetings, PLCs, Department Meetings, and Professional Development training.

Utilizes technology for instruction, assessment, communication, and program logistics.

Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with supervisor, evaluates their job performance.

Makes every student feel noticed, welcomed, and valued.

OTHER DUTIES

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge of adult learning theory.

Experience with second language learning.

Understands and demonstrates classroom management/instructional strategies to support student achievement.

Integrates technology skills to support student learning and student data tracking. 

Knowledge of subject areas, curriculum, and standards-based education.

Understands special education as applied to the needs of the students assigned to the teacher’s particular area/classroom.

Possesses ability to communicate effectively and resolve conflict with students, parents, and community members.

Demonstrates good organization and communication skills.

Keeps professionally current.

QUALIFICATIONS

Active Colorado Teaching License, required.

Endorsement in Linguistically Diverse Education, Masters in TESOL or related field, Adult Basic Education Authorization, preferred. 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to Director/Principal of Adult and Family Education.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Flexible and split schedules; extended school year (summer); days and evenings; typical class periods: Monday-Thursday 9:00 am-12:00 pm / 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is mostly walking and standing with periods of sitting. Typical positions require workers to lift and carry up to 20 pounds; climb stairs, ladders or scaffolding; bend and crouch; reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards; demonstrate an athletic activity or physical exercise; feel the shape, size and temperature of objects; and physically restrain students. Work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.

SALARY RANGE

Teachers (including Psychologists, Occupational, Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Counselors) hired into D11 are placed on the appropriate lane and step of the teacher salary schedule based on two factors which include:

a) the educational background of the applicant and

b) the number of years of prior job related experience (the maximum credit granted is 14 years provided the experience occurred in the last 15 years).
