The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as a key executive leader at Bronson Methodist Hospital, overseeing clinical strategies and ensuring excellence in patient care. This role requires the integration of clinical services across a high-volume, complex healthcare setting, including a Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and a Magnet-recognized facility. The CMO champions operational efficiency, patient safety, and innovation, while balancing financial acumen and business insight to maintain high-quality standards in healthcare. Full-time executive role with accountability for clinical operations across the hospital. Requires flexibility to respond to urgent healthcare situations and participate in strategic decision-making at all levels.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership and Oversight:

  • Direct and enhance clinical practice in a high-acuity environment, characteristic of a Level I Trauma Center, ensuring rapid response and exceptional care in emergency situations.
  • Provide provider leadership and engage providers in the development and implementation of patient care policies, protocols, and procedures at Bronson Methodist Hospital (BMH).
  • Serve as the primary advisor to senior leadership on issues of medical policy and medical staff relations pertaining to BMH.
  • Develop medical staff by-laws and policies in conjunction with medical staff committees, ensuring that policies and programs align with and support the organization’s core values and mission.
  • Provide leadership for implementing innovative and advanced practice models throughout the hospital and hospital outpatient departments.
  • Business Insight: Leverage strategic insight to guide the integration of clinical services while optimizing financial and operational performance.

Medical Staff Oversight:

  • Direct the activities of the medical staff at BMH, ensuring compliance with all applicable standards and regulations.
  • Facilitate the recruitment, credentialing, and continuous professional development of physicians and medical specialists.
  • Provide administrative leadership to BMH Medical Staff Services and support BMH Patient Safety/Risk Management functions.
  • Balancing Stakeholders: Manage relationships effectively among doctors, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), nursing teams, and other key stakeholders, fostering collaboration to meet organizational objectives.

Supervising Medical Directors:

  • Oversee the BMH medical directors across various departments, ensuring alignment with the hospital’s strategic objectives and quality standards.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide guidance and support to medical directors in their leadership roles at BMH.
  • Taking Initiative: Ensure that medical directors take an action-oriented approach to decision-making and clinical strategy development, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

Committee Oversight:

  • Participate in key hospital committees such as the BMH LLC System Medical Executive Committee, Quality Assurance, and Patient Safety Committees.
  • Lead initiatives that drive clinical improvements, establish safety standards, and develop policies impacting patient care across the hospital.
  • Focusing on Performance: Drive accountability and results within committee work, ensuring that all initiatives lead to measurable improvements in patient safety and care quality.

Strategic Management and Quality Assurance:

  • Maintain and improve the hospital’s standing in national rankings, such as U.S. News & World Report, reflecting high-quality outcomes in specialties like cardiology and orthopedics.
  • Execute clinical quality and patient safety initiatives that address all aspects of patient care at BMH.
  • Monitor clinical care provided by the medical and nursing staff, ensuring adherence to evidence-based medicine, and track the impact of care processes on patient outcomes, service perception, and financial outcomes.
  • Ensure adherence to safety and quality standards that meet or exceed requirements for maintaining Level I Trauma and Magnet status.
  • Making Complex Decisions: Manage complex decisions involving patient care, stakeholder needs, and operational performance, ensuring quality outcomes and balanced considerations.

Operational Excellence:

  • Oversee a broad spectrum of clinical services, ensuring operational efficiency and maintaining the highest levels of patient satisfaction.
  • Provide critical evaluation input to the Chief Physician Executive regarding the performance of BMH Local Leadership Council members.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in healthcare delivery, aligning with the hospital’s strategic goals.
  • Managing Execution: Ensure that clinical teams align work efforts with hospital objectives, ensuring flawless execution and accountability.

Collaboration with Bronson Capacity Command Center:

  • Collaborative Operations Management: Actively collaborate with the Bronson Capacity Command Center to enhance operational efficiency and manage patient flow across BMH. This includes optimizing real-time data and analytics to forecast and manage patient admissions and discharges effectively.
  • Streamlining Post-Acute Care Transitions: Work closely with the Capacity Command Center to ensure the smooth and timely transition of patients to post-acute care settings. The CMO will oversee initiatives to improve coordination and availability of post-acute care resources, thereby reducing wait times and improving patient outcomes.
  • Strategic Resource Allocation: Utilize insights provided by the Capacity Command Center to make informed decisions about resource allocation and patient placement. This collaboration ensures that the hospital maximizes capacity and consistently delivers high-quality care.
  • Influencing People & Driving Engagement: Ensure that clinical teams are engaged and aligned with operational goals, fostering a culture of trust and transparency in decision-making processes.

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree; Board Certification in a recognized medical specialty.
  • A valid medical license with a minimum of 10 years of clinical experience, preferably in a Level I Trauma Center.
  • Demonstrable leadership experience within a Magnet-recognized facility.
  • Master’s degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Customer Focus: A commitment to delivering patient-centered care, with the ability to understand and address the needs of both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong strategic vision with the ability to innovate and implement effective healthcare solutions.

  • Creating the New and Different: Foster an environment of innovation, balancing strategic planning with the ability to lead clinical advancements.

Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time.

The job produces some physical demands. Typical of jobs that include regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some lifting of light weight objects.
