ROLE AND PURPOSE:
To assist in implementing the instructional program, including academic, social, emotional, and functional support for each student currently being served in the off-campus Rethink Redo Center. Help support the training of students’ home campus staff, including at least one administrator, on successful interventions as a part of student transition back to the home campus.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution is required.
- Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) preferred
Experience:
- School-based or community child care experience preferred
- Valid driver’s license preferred
- Knowledge and Implementation experience in behavior shaping best practices and Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) preferred
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of general office equipment
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
I. INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT:
- Takes the initiative to assist the teacher and other colleagues with classroom instructional engagement activities, including but not limited to one-to-one and small group instruction, classroom organization, transitions, routines, behavior shaping, communication, and assistive technology.
- Provide and appropriately document assistance to students requiring health-related services and supports such as transitioning, feeding, toileting, hygiene, or other health-related needs while maintaining student dignity and safety.
- Deliver teacher-determined support and services in assigned instructional settings or classes.
- Collect and record designated documentation.
II. SCHOOL/ORGANIZATION CLIMATE:
- Work cooperatively with stakeholders to ensure the success and safety of the students.
- Participate in specialized training to improve skills needed to complete responsibilities for the specialized program assigned successfully.
- Consult with teachers and the principal on all general administration items, including personnel policies.
III. SCHOOL/ORGANIZATIONAL IMPROVEMENT:
- Follow an established schedule. Paraprofessionals work under the direction of the teacher responsible for the instructional block of time.
IV. ADMINISTRATION AND FISCAL/FACILITIES MANAGEMENT:
- Operate copy and laminating machines, computers, and classroom equipment.
- Maintain classroom organization and cleanliness.
- Take initiative to organize, store, and/or prepare student learning and instructional materials.
V. STUDENT ENGAGEMENT:
- Assist teachers in implementing social, emotional, academic, functional, and positively based interventions for teaching replacement behaviors, including reinforcement, consequences, visual systems for shaping behavior, and organizational structures for student learning and success.
- Assist the teacher in addressing physical aggression, including relationship building, de-escalation, and possible use of safe, non-harmful physical restraint procedures.
- Assist the teacher in safe lifting and transfer procedures for students.
VI. SCHOOL/COMMUNITY RELATIONS:
- Interact with students professionally, calmly, and intentionally using language for teaching, communicating effectively, and behavior shaping.
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Ensure all interactions with district personnel and parents are supportive, courteous, and respectful.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information per FERPA requirements.
VII. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT:
- Possess a willingness and skill to self-initiate learning of skills to maximize student social-emotional success.
- Participate in training focusing on areas such as maintaining hygiene, communication systems, specific teaching methodologies, assistive technology, lifts and transfers, first aid, CPR, TBSI online training, and district-approved de-escalation training as required by the job assignment.
- Seek professional learning to support student needs relevant to role and responsibility.
VIII. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise and instruct students in the teacher’s absence during IEP meetings, staffing, and conferences.
- Supervise students during bus duty, building/playground duty, lunch duty, and co-curricular activities.
IX. OTHERS:
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Receive necessary vaccinations to prevent contracting and spreading communicable diseases, such as Hepatitis.
- Wear appropriate equipment for safe lifts and transfers.

- Lifting: While performing these job duties, the employee may frequently be required to lift and / or move at least 50 pounds of materials, lift children from wheelchairs onto changing tables, etc.
- Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to the sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, infectious diseases)
- Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress. While performing the duties of the job assignment, the employee may frequently be required to de-escalate physical aggression, including using safe, non-harmful physical restraint procedures.
