Job Description
Southwark Playhouse EldersCompanies consist of two weekly drama group for non-professional participants aged 65+ and aims to provide:
- Regular drama workshops at the theatre. Led by professional directors/facilitators, these develop participants’ skills, confidence and abilities, and provide them with an opportunity to meet others with similar interests.
- The development of a number of pieces of theatre performed by the group at Southwark Playhouse and, where appropriate, at others venues in the local community.
We are looking for a new co-lead facilitator to join our existing facilitation team. This role would particularly suit those with community theatre experience and an ability to manage a group of people with a variety of different backgrounds, skills and needs, and we are open to applications from people of all ages.
The Improvisers launched in 2021, with a focus on short and long-form improvisation and devising. Around twenty-five participants of all experiences and from across London take part in each twelve-week term, which often end in a short sharing for an invited audience.
Elders Company activity is free for all, with no auditions to join, making it accessible for everyone.
Job Requirements
Essential skills, attributes and experience:
- Excellent drama workshop facilitation skills, particularly in improvisation and devising.
- At least three years of experience of working with non-professional participants in participatory/community contexts, including adults/older adults.
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, inclusive arts practice.
- Proven experience of directing and devising theatre with non-professional groups.
- Ability to create a safe and welcoming space for new members.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with a range of individuals, organizations, and professionals.
- Strong people skills and an ability to work flexibly and creatively to meet people’s needs and potential, with particular emphasis on the needs of older people.
- Ability to respond positively to unexpected challenges.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proven ability to work with other freelance artists and collaborate on creative projects.
