Barking and Dagenham Council supports inspiring cultural programmes developed in collaboration with and for people in the borough. This senior curator and commissioner oversees these and drives the development of cultural space and infrastructure across the borough.

Job Description

The purpose of this senior curatorial and operational role is to develop and deliver inspiring, socially engaged cultural programmes in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. The Senior Curator is a key to leading both curatorial and strategic cultural initiatives supporting the development of cultural space and infrastructure across the borough, as outlined in our new Culture and Heritage Strategy 2024-2030.

Working closely with the Strategic Head of Culture and Heritage, the post holder will focus on the development, growth and sustainability of arts and cultural infrastructure in the borough. They oversee programme delivery for and with people from all groups and sections on the community, including New Town Culture (a ground-breaking programme that explores the role that art and culture can play within in social care services), the council’s National Portfolio Organisation Pen-to-Print, and operational oversight and development of both the Galleon Arts Centre and the Women’s Museum.

The post-holder will collaborate closely with local people, cultural practitioners and organisations across civic society and creative sectors to more effectively deliver our work seamlessly across Council departments and services.

Job Requirements

  • BFA/MA-level degree or comparable experience working in a relevant field.
  • Experience of successful project implementation, including site-based operational development, curation of significant culture and arts-based programmes, budget management, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Proven track record of building positive relationships with funding agencies, regional, national and local arts and heritage organisations.
  • Demonstrable understanding and leadership around issues related to equality and diversity and how they impact communities.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading high profile community-engaged cultural projects.
  • Ability to manage teams and commissioned partners / consultants to perform to the best of their ability and ensure strong operational delivery of programmes and projects.
  • Work in person at least two days a week in the Women’s Museum.
