The Human Rights and Social Development Division has a vision for just, equitable and resilient Pacific societies and it aims to achieve this by advancing human rights, equality and social inclusion for all Pacific people, grounded in cultural values and principles. The work of this Division includes work previously undertaken by the Regional Rights Resource Team (RRRT) in the area of human rights and the Social Development Programme (SDP) in the areas of gender equality and social inclusion, culture and youth development.

In line with its vision, the work of the Division will encompass the following focal areas:

  • Objective 1: Pacific institutions are strong, transparent, and responsive for upholding and promoting human rights and implementing inclusive, gender sensitive and culturally respectful development.
  • Objective 2: Pacific Civil Society understand and can advocate for their rights and uphold cultural values.
  • Objective 3: Pacific culture is protected, preserved, and promoted and culturally relevant and appropriate knowledge and systems are integrated across all work.
  • Objective 4: All PSC programs and operations are grounded in people centered approaches and consider the rights and cultural values of diverse groups including women, children, youth and persons with disabilities.
  • Objective 5: HRSD Division teams work collectively, coherently, and efficiently and to a high standard to achieve shared success for Pacific societies.

The role – Communications Assistant for the Pacific Women Lead at SPC (PWL at SPC) programme, within HRSD, will support communications activities through social media coordination, storytelling, event and media support.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

Develop quality social media content while coordinating the social media schedule to ensure 2-3 PWL new posts weekly, along with the collation of media/social media data

  • Develop quality social media content.
  • Coordinate the social media schedule for 2-3 PWL new posts weekly.
  • Collate social media data to maintain a media/social media log of published articles, interviews and PWL mentions for monthly analysis by the PWL at SPC communications team.

Write stories and e-newsletters for printed publications and digital storytelling using multimedia, such as video stories

  • Write and publish feature stories, media stories, human interest stories and other types of stories. Stories contribute to content for websites.
  • Use already published stories and social media, to produce the PWL e-newsletters four times annually. Basic skills in Adobe in design and photoshop are required for the e-news, with working knowledge of MailChimp ideal.
  • Produce stories on multi-media formats including audio and video stories. Basic skills in video production is required, with the ability to independently use either Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut or other video editing programs. Training is available for Shorthand for image-based stories.

Provide event logistical and communication support including media relations

  • Assist with media support for all events, including writing and arranging approval of media alerts and releases.
  • Provide support in event communications at local, national and regional level, preparing and leading event communication plans for small-scale events.
  • Lead the coordination of PWL merchandise production and stock take for events.

Key selection criteria

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications, or a related discipline from a recognised university.

Technical expertise

  • At least 3 years of communications related experience.
  • Experience in preparing communications materials for a range of audiences and to tight deadlines.
  • Basic skills in either Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut or other video editing programs to produce social media reels and storytelling videos.
  • Basic skills in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop to produce simple publications such as newsletters.
  • Experience taking quality photos at events.
  • Knowledge and understanding of gender equality concepts and issues, including in the Pacific.
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of Pacific cultural values and international human rights principles and standards.
  • Pacific experience and an in-depth understanding of the human rights (including violence against women), good governance and development challenges in the region.

Language skills

  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).

Interpersonal skills and cultural awareness

  • Ability to work in a multicultural, inclusive and equitable environment.

Salary, terms and conditions

Contract DurationUntil 30 June 2026 – subject to renewal depending on funding and performance.

Remuneration – The Communications Assistant is a band 7 position in SPC’s 2024 salary scale, with a commencing taxable salary range of FJD 2,287-2,859 per month, plus local staff benefits. An offer of appointment for an initial contract will normally be made in the lower half of this range, with due consideration given to experience and qualifications. Progression within the salary scale will be based on annual performance reviews.
