Job Description

About the role:

The British Museum aims to establish a comprehensive, large-scale collection audit in order to maintain record quality and collection security and accountability in the long term. This role will lead in the care of the collection through a combination of interventive and preventive conservation measures and coordinate conservation related activities to support the Documentation and Digitisation Project.

This role requires the post holder to have significant work experience in the care and conservation of inorganic objects, with a focus on the conservation of cuneiform and metals. This is a crucial role involving working closely with Curatorial and Collection Management teams and with various cross-departmental stakeholders. This will be achieved by providing relevant conservation expertise through condition assessments and environmental recommendations, handling recommendations, and preparing objects for digitisation using treatments that follow largely minimally interventive principles.

This role delivers through representation, planning, delivery of appropriate conservation treatments to enable record photography and cross-museum collaboration, and to proactively engage with outreach activities of the Conservation team.

Job Requirements

About you:

  • Recognised professional conservation qualification to degree level or equivalent, with emphasis on preventive conservation and conservation of inorganic materials relevant to the specialism of the role.
  • Experience of devising preventive measures including advising and reporting on the environmental requirements in relevant collection storage areas.
  • Demonstrable project experience
  • Demonstrable practical preventive conservation skills
  • Strong understanding of mechanisms involved in material deterioration.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of contemporary principles and practices in preventive conservation
  • Knowledge and expertise in using databases and spreadsheets.
  • Experience with training, teaching, and delivery of information to a range of stakeholders who have varied conservation knowledge.
  • Considerable post qualification experience of working in the heritage sector (e.g., museum, gallery, library, archive sector)
  • PACR accreditation or working towards PACR (Desirable)
