Purpose of Consultancy:
The purpose of this consultancy is to support UNFPA in enhancing innovation capacity and culture across Country Offices by developing and enhancing the Innovation Unit’s efforts on how UNFPA can leverage the opportunities of frontier technologies and ensure women-centric innovation initiatives, including in humanitarian settings, and including conducting needs assessments and facilitating knowledge exchange and scaling innovative solutions.Scope of Work:
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Innovation and Transformation Branch, the consultant will perform the following tasks:1.Technical and Operational Support

  • Provide technical and operational support for UNFPA’s global innovation activities, focusing on digital solutions in women’s health and data innovations.
  • Collaborate with Regional and Country Office Innovation Focal Points to support global, regional, and country innovation, including in humanitarian settings.
  • Identify opportunities for in-house digital product and infrastructure development to support early-stage and frontier solutions in collaboration with the IT Support Office, including in humanitarian settings.

2. Research and Knowledge Management

  • Conduct and compile research on emerging trends in scaling digital health interventions, frontier technologies, and other relevant innovations.
  • Contribute to knowledge management by implementing, monitoring, learning from, and evaluating the global innovation portfolio and digital solutions in women’s health.

3. Innovation Ecosystem Engagement

  • Scan and identify promising digital solutions in women’s health that align with UNFPA’s Strategic Plan, integrating and scaling them within relevant ecosystems.
  • Engage with innovation stakeholders and partners to enhance UNFPA’s capacity to adopt innovative methodologies.

4. Capacity Building and Innovation Community Development

  • Promote the development, adoption, and support of global public goods in women’s health through digital solutions.
  • Strengthen UNFPA’s innovation culture by supporting platforms like the UNFPA Ideas Bank, curating challenges from a tech perspective, and building capacity for Regional and Country Offices.
  • Organize learning sessions and events to showcase innovation in women’s health in various forums, including innovation-related talks and fairs.

5. Project Management

  • Manage innovation, digital health projects, and donor agreements by tracking progress, targets, milestones, lessons learned and deliverables.
  • Provide business operations support for innovation projects, including procurement and human resources functions, including in humanitarian settings.

6. Frontier Technologies and Best Practices

  • Enhance UNFPA’s innovation architecture by integrating best practices and frontier technologies to advance sexual and reproductive health initiatives.

7. Other Responsibilities

  • Support other tasks as required by the Chief of the Innovation and Transformation Branch.

How work will be delivered (e.g. electronic, hard copy etc.):
This consultancy will be performed at UNFPA, New York Headquarters or a remote workplace with adequate computer and internet connectivity equipment. The Chief of the Innovation and Transformation Branch will task the consultant. Delivery dates are scheduled according to the respective teams’ work plans.
The Chief of the Innovation and Transformation Branch will conduct ongoing work monitoring with regular updates in writing will be expected as agreed upon.Required expertise and qualifications:

  • Postgraduate degree in humanities, social sciences, international development, innovation, information technology, business or other relevant field.
  • At least three years of professional experience in social impact, innovation, technology, sustainability, gender equality, global advocacy, or related fields.
  • Prior professional experience in community engagement, partnership building, or related areas.
  • Experience in innovation and related thematic engagements, advocacy, and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in UNFPA mandate areas, innovation, learning and development, or other relevant fields. United Nations experience is a plus.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Proven management, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Motivated to contribute towards peace, development, and serving others.
  • Respect for diversity and adaptability to different cultures, environments, and living conditions.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
