Grassroots Environmental Defenders (GEDs) and their families face significant security risks, criminalization, loss of livelihoods, and even extrajudicial killings due to their advocacy. Standing Together for Environmental Defenders (The STAND Initiative) is designed to expand available resources and strengthen the ability of GEDs to access legal mechanisms, participate in environmental decision-making processes, seek justice, and leverage coalitions and platforms as part of their advocacy, while using appropriate safety and protection strategies. The STAND Initiative is a global initiative that will create differentiated capacity-building programs in Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Kenya, Indonesia, and the Philippines and a global Defender Small Grant Fund.

WRI Indonesia as the Country Lead Organization (CLO) will manage the development and implementation of the country capacity building program and act as country security coordinator. Specifically, this role includes:

Identifying and engaging with GEDs, GED networks, and current partners already providing support to GEDs to co-create the training program and ensure it incorporates the skills, knowledge, and strategies needed and requested by defenders.

Designing a training program including identifying technical training partners who can provide GEDs with legal assistance, digital and physical security, media support, psychosocial support, and emergency financial support for protection needs with the support ALLIED, WRI and other partners.

Ensuring the program safely meets the needs of wide range of defenders including those of varying religion, sex, disability, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, and age.

Assist in developing the Defender Small Grant Fund (DSGF) including themes, criteria, grantee decision, and supporting grantees during grant period including optional storytelling and security.

Supporting project management including Department of State, subgranting, MEL and reporting requirements.

The Research Analyst will be responsible to support the implementation of STAND initiative in Indonesia. This position will work to achieve the project’s goal which is to strengthen the long-term ability of GEDs to engage in evidence-based advocacy campaigns and coalitions addressing environmental and development impacts. This position will work with diverse stakeholders, mainly civil society organizations and government agencies, to identify and address potential social inequities that may arise during the transition.

The Research Analyst will be based in Jakarta with an office-flex working arrangement, reporting directly to the STAND Initiative Project Lead and will be under the supervision of Forest and Peat Monitoring Senior Manager. He/she will work with the STAND project team in the Jakarta office and regional office, as well as collaborate with the rest of the relevant program team. This position will also coordinate with the Center of Equitable Development at the WRI Global office.

Technical Works and Research:

  • Conduct data collection and research for socio-political context analysis, stakeholder mapping, and needs assessment analysis for the STAND initiative.
  • Develop and produce report on socio-political context analysis, stakeholder mapping, and needs assessment analysis, with support from the Project Lead and Manager
  • Support in coordinating any research and analysis to further develop insights for environmental defender.
  • Development of outreach materials, training modules and plan, as well as implementation of general outreach and capacity building for national and local government, research institutions, and CSOs as necessary.
  • Participate in regular coordination with the global STAND initiatives team to conduct the research and develop outreach materials.
  • Actively contribute to WRI Indonesia’s research activities, in particular, for topics related to forest legality and forest monitoring.
  • Work with the Research and Data Integrity (RDI) team and Gender Social Equity (GSE) team to support initiatives related to research and knowledge products.

Project Management and Communication :

  • Assist in coalition building with a range of stakeholders, including community groups, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and industry representatives. Facilitate meetings, workshops, and consultations to gather input and ensure diverse perspectives are considered in decision-making processes.
  • Develop terms of reference (TOR) to implement community engagement and capacity-building activities, i.e. Listening Sessions and training, within the STAND project. 
  • Assist the Project Lead in organizing and facilitating periodic reviews, activity monitoring, and ensuring timely project deliverables, together with the PMEL team. 
  • Prepare minutes of meetings, travel reports, and other relevant documents to support program/project activities. 
  • Support the program/project lead in developing reports, working papers, and other communication materials. 
  • Facilitate as well as assist in preparing and conducting workshops, meetings, training sessions, and other events conducted as part of the project. 
  • Report monthly activities to the Project Lead to ensure alignment with program goals and timelines. 
  • Work together with WRI Indonesia’s Communication teams and partners in delivering public outreach, education, advocacy and engagement activities

What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor in social sciences, political sciences, cultural studies, environmental studies, or a related field. A combination of education and relevant work experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum 3 (three) full years of experience in research on social equity and environmental justice, notably in qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and identify key insights.
  • Experience in conducting social impact assessments, equity analysis, and participatory or community-based research.
  • Knowledge of forestry, sustainable development, climate change, or related fields is an advantage.
  • The ability to organize project documentation, including project plan, implementation progress, reporting, and other necessary documents & data is an advantage.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work across institutional departments/programs.
  • Ability to manage professional relationships to effectively communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia and English on both verbal and written communications.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite is imperative.
  • Strong writing skills for both technical and general audiences. Oral presentation skills are a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed
  • Legally able to work in Indonesia.
