Job Purpose: The Consultant is responsible for leading the delivery of funded projects and advancing CIVIC’s UN Program objectives, based in New York. The successful candidate will work with CIVIC’s programmatic staff to develop and implement advocacy strategies as well as contributing to key events and research products, including CIVIC’s role in organizing POC Week 2026 and the 2026 edition of CIVIC’s POC Trends Report.

Key Functions:
The Consultant, UN is responsible for:
- Substantively advancing CIVICâs objectives, leading policy engagement with UN bodies, member states, and key stakeholders, building and leading civil society coalitions, participating in UN- and member state-led working groups, feeding into key UN policy processes and debates on POC, and shaping thematic issues related to POC at the UN.
- Representing CIVIC at multilateral and bilateral meetings with UN, member state, and NGO stakeholders, and in the POC Week Steering Committee.
- Researching and drafting substantial portions of CIVIC’s flagship POC Trends Report by tracking and analyzing global civilian harm trends in 2025, conducting desk research on specific protection issues and countries of concern, liaising with CIVIC staff and partners to coordinate contributions.
- Supporting efforts to strengthen the protection of civilians through UN and AU peacekeeping, with a focus on influencing UN peacekeeping policy and practice.
- Conceptualizing and organizing events, briefings, roundtables, and other private and public activities to advance program objectives.
- Support administrative and program management tasks, including internal reporting, and other general duties assigned by senior managers.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of an MA, MS, or JD.
- At least 5 years of relevant work experience, including proven subject matter expertise in protection of civilians, peace operations, or related issues, and knowledge of the UN Security Council and current political dynamics.
- Excellent research and analytical skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information and translate findings into actionable advocacy and policy recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, both orally and in writing, including drafting reports, talking points, research inputs, briefs, and policy analysis for diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple portfolios and competing priorities.
- Ability to interact professionally and build relationships with a wide range of individuals inside and outside the organization.
- Personal qualities of resourcefulness, diligence, tact, confidentiality, and integrity.
- English proficiency.
Valid authorization to be contracted as a consultant in New York City, New York, United States of America.
Desirable
- Experience at the UN, including representing an organization to member states, media outlets, and civil society partners on sensitive issues.
- Knowledge of UN peace operations, including their management, budgeting, and protection mandates.
- Experience researching and drafting flagship publications or major analytical reports.
- Experience planning and organizing high-level events, briefings, or roundtables.
- Knowledge of a specific country, region, or thematic issue relevant to CIVIC’s work.
- Ability to provide timely, high-quality strategic advice to senior managers and external stakeholders.
- Experience representing an organization at multilateral forums, including meetings with UN officials, member states, and civil society partners.
- Experience coordinating coalitions or networks of organizations and stakeholders.
- Fluency in French or another UN official language.
