Minimum Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Student Development, or related field
  • Minimum of two years of P-12 teaching or other related educational experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, speaking, and writing skills
  • Strong organizational skills with a focus on accuracy and detail in recordkeeping
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Proficiency in common office software (e.g., Google Workspace) including data entry and management software
  • Be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary; typical workload may include one (1) evening event per week and two (2) weekends per semester

License/Certification Required

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Five or more years of P-12 teaching or other related educational experience
  • Experience in program development, implementation, and assessment in an educational setting
  • Experience in planning and executing events and programs
  • In-depth understanding of student development theories and best practices in student engagement
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to enhance student retention efforts

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe James Center for Student Success and Advising (JCSSA) resides in the Reich College of Education (RCOE). It provides professional education opportunities for current students, as well as overall support and general advising for all Teacher Education majors. The James Center also supports the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES), North Carolina Teaching Fellows, Education Peer Ambassadors, and Appalachian Educators Club.

The Coordinator of Teaching Fellows and Student Engagement reports directly to the Director of the JCSA and is responsible for:

Partnership with the Director of the NC Teaching Fellows and the Director of the James Center for Student Success and Advising to assist in the support and coordination of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program (NCTF). Responsibilities will focus on student retention, persistence, and completion of the NC Teaching Fellows Program.

  • Assist in maintaining all program records of NCTF, including tracking, program requirements and participation and the financial aid aspects of this forgivable loan program.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate the enrichment programming specific to NCTF in collaboration with the Director of the James Center.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of the ACES Program in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of shared programming to provide intentional opportunities to NCTF and ACES cohorts.
  • Create and maintain program resources, including manuals, websites, newsletters, and forms.
  • Participate in NCTF programming activities, events, retreats, and travel that may include nights and weekends.

Working collaboratively with the Director of JCSSA to support efforts for student outreach, retention and support of teacher education candidates in the Reich College of Education (RCOE).

  • Implement programming that supports the retention of underrepresented populations in accordance with the college and university goals for student success and opportunity.
  • Coordinate pre-service teachers’ planning and preparation to meet licensure requirements (e.g., required testing for admission to teacher education and licensure).
  • Provide students with information regarding various campus offices that support students and refer students appropriately when needed.
  • Collaborate with the RCOE Coordinator of Recruitment, Retention, and Scholarships and the Associate Director of Admissions for Recruitment and Special Programs to support recruitment and retention efforts of the college and university.

Creating, coordinating, and communicating meaningful professional development to Appalachian State University pre-service educators.

  • Collaborate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders (e.g., RCOE faculty and staff and other Appalachian State University academic departments, Public School Partnership, public school districts, etc.).
  • Collaborate with Alumni Affairs to engage Appalachian State University alumni in pre-service teacher professional development efforts (e.g., facilitating workshops, participating in networking sessions, etc.).
  • Coordinate Professional Development marketing efforts with the RCOE Communications Director.

Providing leadership and coordinated programming for the Appalachian Educators Club.

  • Support outreach opportunities for preservice teachers to work with various school groups who come to campus/Reich College of Education.
  • Co-advise 9+ committees and 400+ organization members on club policies, leadership, etc.

Providing support and leadership development to the Education Peer Ambassador (EPA) program in collaboration with the Director of the James Center.

  • Participate in the recruitment, interview process, and selection of student workers for Education Peer Ambassador (EPA) student work positions.
  • Implement and supervise new EPA mentoring initiatives.
  • Maintain EPA schedules and ensure EPA availability for James Center, RCOE and campus partner events and activities.
