Course Description:

EDSL 332 Literacy 2: Teaching Writing in ESL

Examines current literacy theory and practice, focusing on the teaching of writing skills for the production of texts in various genres, formats and functions, in ESL for elementary and secondary level students. Based on an understanding of writing as a process, key areas include: the adaptation and development of appropriate writing activities; feedback and revision; theme- and literature-based activities; and building upon reading and oral activities.

Teaching Qualification Requirements:

Education:

1. A Master’s degree in Second Language Education or related area (in exceptional circumstances applicants without a Master’s degree but with significant research or professional experience related to the course content may be considered).

2. A teaching degree or equivalent and experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).

3. PhD or equivalent in a relevant field is an asset.

Experience:

1. Expert knowledge of course content and ESL pedagogy as represented in current eCalendar description, including:

  • current L2 literacy theory and practice.
  • teaching of L2 writing skills for the production of texts in various genres, formats and functions.
  • understanding of writing as a process.

2. Knowledge of the Quebec Education program (QEP).

3. Familiarity with the 13 professional competencies specified in the Ministère de l’Éducation.

4. Experience teaching ESL in the Quebec elementary/secondary French education system.

5. Previous successful experience teaching similar course(s) to pre-service teachers.

Other:

  • A commitment to working with a team of committed and engaged instructors
  • Must be available to attend course coordination and planning meeting minimum of 2 weeks in advance of the course start date.
  • Knowledge of the impact and proven record integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Familiarity using myCourses, ZOOM and other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences.
  • Familiarity teaching blended classes is an asset.
  • Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital teaching and learning tools.
