Exciting opportunity for a Textiles & Wool Craft Teacher to join the team at our new Ashdown Garden School, in Forest Row.

Job Description

40 hours per week, 42 weeks per year

Salary Range: Qualified Actual Salary: £27,215 – £38,619 FTE £28,887 – £40,990

Unqualified Actual Salary: £24,786 – £31,537 FTE £26,308 – £33,474

(Starting salary dependent on qualifications and experience)

In this role you will be ensuring the pupils of Ashdown Garden School engage in learning and achieve by providing practical, experiential and therapeutic education through careful planning of the structure, methodology and delivery of the learning experience.

You will deliver sessions in spinning, weaving, felting, knitting, and natural dyeing, using traditional techniques you will teach students to produce practical and creative textile items.

Ashdown Garden School, located nearby the ancient area of Ashdown Forest, is a specialist school for SEND children between the ages of 7-16 years, offering a range of practical land and craft learning activities. Ashdown Garden School is part of Ruskin Mill Trust.

Established in 1984, Ruskin Mill Trust is an educational charity that operates in England, Scotland and Wales.
We offer exciting outdoor learning environments, utilising practical land and craft activities to support the development of work and life skills in young people with autistic spectrum conditions and other learning differences. Our research-led method, Practical Skills Therapeutic Education, is inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, John Ruskin and William Morris. Job Requirements

o undertake this position successfully you will have:

  • Practical experience in textiles and woolcraft, including spinning, weaving, felting, and dyeing.
  • Experience working with children with SEND, Autism, and complex behavioural or mental health needs.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and ICT skills (including planning, assessment, and reporting).
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire, demonstrating resilience, empathy, and creativity in challenging situations.
  • A teaching qualification (QTS) is desirable, or willingness to work towards one.
