Job Description

The Data Journalism Fellow will provide essential research, journalism, and communications support for a joint collaboration between the American Public Media (APM) Research Lab and the Ten Across initiative at Arizona State University. The position will help build necessary capacity to increase the relevance and reach of both organizations and raise their visibility locally and nationally. Supporting and collaborating with existing staff members from both organizations, the Data Journalism Fellow partners with the teams to produce and distribute more unique data analysis. This position, will give you the opportunity to develop skills and experiences related to data journalism and reporting, including research, analysis, digital storytelling and more as well as experience in public media operations. In addition to professional development, this position will expand your network with other professionals in the data journalism and journalism industry.

*One-year full-time fellowship with the employment period expected until May 2025

Essential Duties

  • Pitch and develop data-driven and informed stories reflecting key issues impacting the Ten Across region. 
  • Contribute to and learn from American Public Media Research Lab, a dynamic research start-up embedded in the a nationally renowned American Public Media organization, with numerous opportunities for professional growth, networking, and support.
  • Prepare data visualizations, web content, newsletters, and social media communications.
  • Review data, reports, and web content for accuracy and clarity.
  • Assist with data collection.
  • Participate in research design and communicate survey findings. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of being an ASU graduate within last 12-months or currently enrolled in ASU graduate degree program
  • Evidence in having journalism, writing, and communications experience
  • Experience in data analysis, programming, design, infographics, digital displays, data visualization and/or interactives
  • Evidence in having background/completed some coursework in social sciences, public health, public policy, economics, statistics
  • Evidence of being detail-oriented individual
  • Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience in being self-directed but willing to ask for help and direction as needed
  • Experience with computer programs (i.e., Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Evidence of enthusiasm for APM tagline of “bringing facts into focus”
  • Experience with data review, quality assurance, and/or copy-editing
  • Work experience with large datasets
  • Experience with statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, STATA
  • Experience with CMS such as Wordpress, Squarespace

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed on the TEMPE CAMPUS in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Frequently required to stand and walk to other areas of the school
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to regularly change priorities to accomplish tasks with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time
  • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping
  • Moderate noise level
  • Occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions
