An appointment at the rank of Librarian I or higher (as appropriate) is anticipated. Salary is based on experience and qualifications. Salary ranges for Librarian I as of September 1, 2023, are $63,978 to $69,183.

The Patrick Power Library at Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, invites applications for the position of Data Services and Copyright Librarian. This is a permanent-track position at the rank of Librarian I (or as appropriate). We require a highly motivated, service-oriented full time professional Librarian, who is excited about working in an academic library and who will take an innovative approach to promote and manage the library’s research data infrastructure and copyright services. The successful applicant will report to the University Librarian, supervise the Copyright and Research Data Management assistants, and work in collaboration with fellow Librarians and Library Managers.

Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the University Librarian, the Data Services and Copyright Librarian will:
• Provide data and statistical information services, including promotion and support for Statistics Canada DLI resources, and business statistics resources.
• Provide expertise on finding and using open data sources, including government data, especially in the business and social sciences.
• Engage with library and campus stakeholders, including faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, instructional technologists, and other library staff, to develop scalable and sustainable support for data-intensive courses through research consultations, workshops, presentations, and course-related instruction.
• Provide support for services involving software and tools for data analysis such as SAS, SPSS, STATA, or R.
• Manage Research Data Management, including description and online deposit of data created by Saint Mary’s researchers and tracking of faculty scholarly output.
• Manage copyright services provided through the library, advise on issues and questions related to copyright, and maintain current awareness of best practices for copyright compliance in higher education.
• Supervise staff in Research Data Management and Copyright, including training, performance management, and ensuring appropriate related supports are provided.
• Liaise with assigned academic departments to select materials and assess collections for course and program reviews.
• Deliver information literacy and classroom teaching sessions and provide Reference and Research services.
• Participate in library management, university and consortia committees and activities, and oversee library, consortium and university-wide projects.
• Perform other responsibilities as required.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Data Services and Copyright Librarian you will have:
• A Master’s degree in library/information studies from an ALA-accredited program.
• A minimum of one-year professional librarian experience providing data services.
• Knowledge of data resources, data information literacy, principles and practices of research data management, data curation, and the data lifecycle.
• Experience developing and managing collections.
• Expertise in Excel, and experience with common software packages used in statistical data analysis.
• Knowledge of copyright compliance and fair dealing practices.
• Experience and knowledge of library reference and research services.
• Demonstrated effective teaching and presentation skills in-person and online.
• Experience working effectively within a team environment.
• The ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Asset Qualifications:
• Experience in an academic library setting.
• Supervising and training staff in a unionized environment.
• Experience with identifying and developing opportunities for students and faculty to utilize the library’s data resources and services, including instruction to students, faculty, and library staff in the use of statistical resources.
• Expertise in GIS and data visualization, as well as familiarity with methods for data preparation and analysis.
• Demonstrated experience with copyright compliance and fair dealing practices in an academic setting.
• Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.
