Job Summary:

The School of Dental Medicine (SDM) welcomes applications for full-time Dental Care Assistants (Dental Care II) to work and support the Advanced Care Clinics. Primarily responsibilities include four-handed chair side dental assistance in all specialized dentistry (i.e., oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, endodontics, and restorative), patient preparation and positioning, clinical area preparation, use of sterile techniques and performing infection control procedures. Individuals will work with a variety of SDM undergraduate dental students, residents, staff, and faculty.

We are seeking administrative professionals who are looking to develop their dental care knowledge, skills and experience. The position is located at the University of Colorado – Anschutz Medical Campus. Hours will be dependent on business need (i.e., patient scheduling, mentorship and training, professional development, holidays), but typically will be Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm.

Examples of Work Performed:

Chair Side Assistance (95%):

  • Patient preparation and positioning
  • Clinical area preparation for the treatment of patients
  • Use of sterile techniques and infection control procedures
  • Performs appropriate aseptic and sterilization techniques
  • Prepares specialized instruments setups for undergraduate students, residents and faculty to be used during dental patient treatment
  • Inspects appropriate instruments/tools for good condition/working order
  • Performs dental intraoral and extraoral radiographs using appropriate technique, x-ray equipment and safety equipment
  • Develops, mounts and identifies radiographic films
  • Troubleshoots the scanner to make sure films are being developed with high quality
  • Responsibility for training lower-level technicians

Clinical Education Support (5%):

  • Support the educational mission of the SDM, including role modeling and assisting with coaching students on how to function as a dental assistant in both four-handed chairside activities and in clinical operations support.

Work Location:

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus with the School of Dental Medicine.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of dental assisting experience.
  • Substitution: Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience. 
  • NOTE: If exercising the education substitution, applicants MUST attach a copy of their dental assisting certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.
  • Must possess current valid CPR and/or BLS certification.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent (within the last 5 years) experience working in a fast-paced dental environment.
  • Experience with clinical area preparation in a dental clinic and/or office. 
  • Experience taking x-rays.
  • Experience performing and developing digital dental radiographs.
  • Experience sterilizing dental tools, instruments and equipment.
  • Experience working with students and faculty in a higher education and/or academic medical environment.
  • Experience working with multiple doctors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge, proper use and technique, and understanding of dental terminology, materials, instruments and equipment. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge dental coding, and clinical patient health records systems (e.g., axiUm, EPIC).
  • Knowledge of the professional standards, concepts, and practices of dental assisting, patient/customer care, and clinical operations.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate a broad range of laws, rules, and regulations (i.e., FERPA, OSHA, HIPPA) in order to exercise good judgment in applying them to academic healthcare and clinical challenges.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Outlook, excel, word, PowerPoint, TEAMS) and other business applications (i.e., Zoom, CU university resources, websites, tools).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, including public speaking.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality while working with sensitive information.
  • Ability to take initiative with daily work activities and collaborates to create a positive effect on team performance.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and effective time management.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting hiring range for this position has been established as $37,827 to $43,880.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
