The San Mateo County Community College District is home to Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. All three of our colleges are designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions enrolling approximately 33,000 students each academic year. The Position
The Colleges seek a part-time faculty member in Dental Assisting. The ideal candidate will share the Colleges’ commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Provide instruction in Dental Assisting.
2. Implement skill building in the Dental Assisting lab setting.
3. Prepare class assignments and course work.
4. Grade student work.
5. Record and post grades in a timely fashion.
6. Report to the lead instructor as needed.
7. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours.
8. Participate in Dental Assisting team, department, and division meetings.
9. Assist in curriculum development and revision.
10. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needs.

b. Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
b. Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:
i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and
ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
b. Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Recent experience in dental assisting and/or concurrent employment in a dental office.
2. Willingness to update skills if needed.
3. Maintain licensure by attending continuing education classes or home study courses.
4. Ability to teach in those areas as assigned. These positions may require assignment to evenings or weekends.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of successful teaching techniques.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of current dental assisting issues and trends.
7. Be willing to actively participate and contribute to changes in the Dental Assisting program at department and team meetings.
i. Evidence of ability as a teacher including:
8. A commitment to staying abreast of new trends, techniques, and materials in dental assisting.
9. A commitment to supporting gender and ethnically diverse students enrolled in dental assisting.
10. The ability to ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress.
11. The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning and encourage them to learn problem solving skills.
12. The ability to adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of students.
13. The ability to assist students in the acquisition, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge and skills in dental assisting.
14. A willingness to work with both faculty and staff in a spirit of collegiality at department, division, college, and District levels.
15. The ability to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one’s own pedagogy and modify techniques to engage students.
16. A familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of computer-based technology appropriate to the field of dentistry.
17. A commitment to the SMCCCD goal of integrating writing skills across the curriculum.
18. A commitment to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college.

Foreign Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs in order for it to be considered for the satisfaction of minimum qualifications. Foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated by a U.S.-based credentials evaluation service. The District currently accepts evaluations from agencies approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

However, consideration may be given to those whose drug convictions occurred more than five years ago. A conviction for other crimes may not necessarily disqualify you from the job for which you may be applying.
