Description of Job
GENERAL SUMMARY
This employee will fulfill the responsibilities of a full-time faculty member at CCD Dental Hygiene Program. Responsibilities include teaching didactic, laboratory and clinical dental hygiene courses; student advising; scholarly activity; college and community service; and professional association activities. The ideal candidate must command strong teaching skills, creating and modeling a quality-learning environment to support a diverse student population including students with disabilities or special learning needs and effectively structure classes and curriculum to support program and course outcomes. The ideal candidate must also be experienced and committed to providing culturally sensitive care to patients of varying ethnic, linguistic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This position will also be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing a Dental Assisting to Dental Hygiene bridge program.
This position is a full-time, 9-month faculty position with the expectation of some part-time hours during the summer semester. Faculty have opportunities to teach courses and perform additional duties during the summer semester for additional compensation.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Instructional:
- Teach assigned didactic, lab, and internship courses at the associate and the bachelor levels.
- Teach clinical courses in a clinical setting utilizing current instrumentation methodologies
- Supervise students in clinical courses through the length of program. Act as mentor and advisor for issues regarding clinic, patient care, and overall, second year
- Maintain required office hours.
- Teaching responsibilities may require developing, evaluating, and implementing the educational components of a future dental assisting to dental hygiene bridge program.
- Provide subject matter expertise in support of new and revised curriculum proposals for the future dental assisting to dental hygiene bridge program.
- Serve as a role model for dental hygiene students by participating in and being an active member of RDH professional organizations, support of college philosophy for students with diverse goals, backgrounds, and learning styles.
- Investigate and develop a structure for a dental assisting to a dental hygiene bridge program.
Service:
- Work with institutional and community stakeholders on dental assisting to dental hygiene bridge program initiatives.
- Participate in extracurricular activities that enhance the students, the profession, and promote the program and the college.
- Activities include student advising professional association meetings, and program-level advising.
- May be asked to serve as SCADHA faculty supervisor.
- Serve on the program’s advisory board.
- Participate in faculty meetings, departmental meeting, center meetings, and other inter-collegiate committees as necessary.
- Participate in college-wide committees and special functions.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Education:
- An associate degree or higher from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited dental hygiene program.
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher from a nationally accredited institution.
Experience:
- Minimum 3-4 years full-time or equivalent clinical dental hygiene experience within the last 5 years. 5-years full-time or equivalent preferred.
- 1-year of clinical and/or didactic teaching experience required. Didactic teaching experience preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Must be able to demonstrate the correct usage of common dental hygiene instruments,
- Must be able to demonstrate computer literacy in the following areas: email, internet usage, Microsoft Office Suite, especially, PowerPoint, and Outlook and online learning management systems. Must be willing utilize “paperless” medical/dental technologies including digital radiography, computerized records/charting, and use of the intraoral camera.
- Must be able to demonstrate classroom delivery competency on a wide range of dental hygiene core curriculum to include Clinic Theory, Clinic Practice, Advanced Instrumentation, Ethics and Practice Management, Emergency procedure protocols, Oral Pathology, and/or Periodontics.
- Must be able to deliver classroom and clinic education providing cultural, racial, and ethnic sensitivity.
- Must be organized, flexible and willing to accept new challenges.
- Some evening and weekend hours are possible.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Master’s Degree in Education, Public Health, or related field.
Experience:
EDDA instruction and curriculum development.
Previous experience in dental hygiene instruction and curriculum development.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Licensure/Certification:
- Possess an active, current dental or dental hygiene license and Local Anesthesia Permit, issued by the Colorado Dental Board with no current discipline.
- Current BLS, and diode laser certifications.
- Current OSHA & Bloodborne Pathogens training
