FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The CUNY School of Medicine (SoM) located in the heart of Harlem, New York, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system and the only public medical school in Manhattan. Building upon 50 years of success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, the institution transitioned to the CUNY School of Medicine in 2016. The CUNY SoM offers an accelerated BS/MD degree (7-year program) and a Physician Assistant Master’s Degree (27 months program). True to its legacy of access, opportunity, and community transformation, the medical school’s mission remains to recruit highly talented students as diverse as New York City itself. CUNY SoM places a special emphasis on the recruitment of those who are underrepresented in the field of medicine and on training high quality, culturally competent health professionals and scientists equipped to address the healthcare needs of New York’s medically under-served communities. As a major priority, CUNY SoM also seeks to enhance the recruitment and retention of senior leadership, faculty, and staff to more closely reflect the diversity of our student body.

The Dean’s Office is currently seeking a Chairperson for the Department of Medical Education. Reporting to Dean, this position is to build and guide a successful academic department that conducts and promotes research in medical education and the health sciences, facilitates the translation of educational research into educational best practices ultimately benefitting learners and patients, and promotes teaching and learning excellence plus innovation across the continuum of CUNY SoM medical education. This faculty leadership position involves frequent high-level interaction and collaboration with campus leaders across the full range of educational intersections, promoting the science of teaching and learning and meeting the educational needs of its faculty, learners and staff. The Chairperson for the Department of Medical Education duties include but are not limited to the following responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Dean and Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Administration and Finance, devise a strategic plan for the department with a mission-aligned budget that is managed responsibly and updated annually; Identify and obtain external funding and philanthropic opportunities to support the department
  • Oversee all departmental operational activities in medical and health sciences education, including supporting research, faculty development, program development, process improvement across the education spectrum, and optimizing the application of technology to biomedical education.
  • Provide consultation to advise on educational program design, development and implementation, and to infuse quality measures and continuous improvement as standards. Examples include customizing faculty development programs in teaching and education, and developing quality improvement diagnostics and skills’ remediation programs for teaching faculty.
  • Collaborate with other faculty and non-faculty leaders to advise on new educational initiatives, promote innovation in educational scholarship, competency-based assessment, teaching programs, educational quality, and the use of novel technology.
  • Work in partnership with the other faculty and non-faculty leaders to advise on current program updates, including programs that enhance educational research, curriculum and teaching innovation, the educational expertise of SoM teaching faculty, and SoM students’ educational experience.
  • Create an Academy for Educational Scholars (AES) to steward activities and initiatives and establish a junior faculty member mentorship program in educational scholarship and academic medicine career development as well as a leadership track for students.
  • Expand medical education research throughout the School and address department-level educational research needs
  • Collaborate with the Associate Deans for Quality, Medical Education, Graduate studies, Research, Student Wellness, and other departmental chairs to enhance program evaluation, educational scholarship, and innovation in faculty continuing education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS

M.D. with specialty board qualifications required, as well as a record of significant achievement in profession or field of expertise. Also required are demonstrated or promised evidence of success as a teacher and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience with LCME and ARC-PA requirements and accreditation site visits and advanced experience and knowledge about healthcare compliance, regulatory affairs, and operations.
  • Able to partner with clinical, research, and academic administrative leaders and knowledge of emerging health care trends and recognized leader in the health care administration.
  • Proven experience in curriculum development and assessment in medical education and strong understanding of the culture of academic medicine – especially in BS/MD programs.
  • Substantial knowledge and experience regarding competency-based medical education, faculty development, program evaluation, instructional design, learner assessment, and educational technology.
  • Exceptional and well-developed leadership, interpersonal communication, and team-building skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously for different stakeholders and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a diverse and rapid-paced academic medical environment Strong understanding of the culture of academic medicine and the ability to address faculty concerns.
  • Experience working with underrepresented, low income, and marginalized students experience working in health-related or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Medicine) fields or other health professional pipeline programs highly desirable.
  • Experience with quality curriculum development and assessment principals as it relates to health care disparities to improve the quality of care and health professional decision making.
  • Advanced understanding of the importance of diversity in academic medicine and the impact of educational and health care disparities on medicine.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: $140,087 – $207,923

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
