General Function 

The Department Head is responsible for administering an academic department within a college which may include and is not limited to, faculty recruitment and development, faculty evaluation, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement, departmental budgeting and budget control, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department.

Description of Primary Duties 

This position is an internal posting and is only available to current full-time employees of Missouri State University.The Department Head provides active leadership in strategic planning; recruitment and retention; curriculum and scheduling; hiring and evaluation of faculty; budget management; accreditation; and student success efforts. The Department Head leads faculty in articulating the unit’s vision and in setting goals to attain it. The Department Head of English also works closely with the Foundation and College on fundraising/development efforts.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of school director are prescribed by the College Dean in concert with guidance from the Provost. These include: possession of a terminal degree; at least three years of successful teaching, research and service experience; evidence of leadership experience; and a demonstrated commitment to Missouri State University’s inclusive excellence principles.

Additional QualificationsThe ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree and be tenured as an associate or full professor; have a minimum of 3 years significant administrative experience as Department Head, Assistant Department Head, Program Coordinator or equivalent. A record of success in teaching, research and service along with curriculum development and delivery.
