UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child a Calling,

UNICEF started working in Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 1986. Papua New Guinea is among the most ethnolinguistically diverse countries, with over 800 languages spoken among its estimated population of 11.78 million. The country’s mountainous terrain, small and scattered islands, poor transportation networks and expensive air travel, widespread poverty, and gender inequality pose enormous challenges for the provision of basic services, making it hard for many children to realize their rights. In PNG, a Programme of Cooperation jointly developed with the government guides UNICEF work in the country. Through this programme of cooperation with the Government of PNG, UNICEF is able to influence major policy and programme decisions, as well as the allocation of budget priorities, for the benefit of children. In addition, UNICEF works closely with bilateral and multi-lateral development partners, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, the media, and academia to act as ‘pressure points’ to trigger public debates on child rights and development issues.
