Design for functionally graded 3D printing

University of York

nearmejobs.eu

This project will investigate methods to design and develop functionally graded parts through 3D printed plastics. The primary focus will be on orthopaedic medical devices used to replace bone where current parts often fail due to stress discontinuities between implants and bone. The same principles of developing and exploiting the full potential of 3D printing are applicable to many other industrial sectors where there is a trade-off between competing design requirements.

This project will apply a combination of computer and experimental simulation to develop and validate parts. This research will benefit from excellent computing facilities, expertise in computer-aided engineering, the available experimental facilities including mechanical testing and 3D-printing.

This project is open-ended making it suitable for MSc by Research and PhD level

About Movement Science and Engineering at York

Movement Science and Engineering is a subgroup within Healthcare Engineering at the University of York. Our team comprises 10 academics focused on research that aims to understand movement science and restore mobility to patients. Our research topics span a diverse range of expertise, from the development of MEMS sensors for studying proteins to AI-based signal analysis for the automated assessment of neurodegenerative and musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions and human-machine interactions with assistive robotics.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have (or expect to obtain) a minimum of a UK upper second-class honors degree (2.1) or equivalent in STEM based degree. Applicants with experience in biomechanics, mechanical engineering or stress analysis are especially welcome.

How to Apply

Applicants should apply via the University’s online application system at https://www.york.ac.uk/study/postgraduate-research/apply/. Please read the application guidance first so that you understand the various steps in the application process.
