Context

Social protection is among the key concorporate priority under the poverty moonshot within the framework of UNDP’s Strategic Plan 2022-2025 and with a view to contribute to the achievement of SDG 1 and 10 as well as other relevant SDGs. Countries in the Asia Pacific region have stepped up and made tangible strides to expand social protection coverage amid the pandemic, however, the intersecting cost of living, financial and climate crisis has highlighted systemic weaknesses and long-term fiscal sustainability of social protection regimes. The importance of the ‘just transition’ is particularly pronounced in Asia and the Pacific as countries in the region are globally among the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change while rapid economic growth across the region has entrenched carbon-intensifying development strategies, raising the costs of a transition to green and sustainable alternatives. Social protection provides vital instruments to manage the social dimension of this transition, serving as the glue that binds together the planks of an integrated climate, development and equity framework.
This knowledge product explores the interlinkages between social protection and the just transition and highlights the importance of social protection in enabling a just and equitable transition to a more sustainable economy and a net-zero future. The report discusses the concepts of social protection and the just transition, their significance in the context of sustainable development, and their mutually restoring nature. The report also examines the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating social protection into just transition strategies, and provides policy recommendations for governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders to effectively leverage social protection as a key pillar of the just transition. The paper draws on the experience from countries in Europe and Asia Pacific region as well as UNDP’s projects – especially those funded by vertical funds – to draw the lessons and directions in reforming social protection systems to navigate pathways towards people-centred net-zero future.
Final publication is intended for policy makers, subject matter experts, development partners including donors, IFIs and UN agencies as well as general public with interest in the subject.

Task description

UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub is looking for an Online Volunteer who will support us with the design & layout of knowledge product “Social Protection and the Just Transition in the Asia Pacific Region”. In close collaboration with the UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub Inclusive Growth team, the Online Volunteer will be asked to:
• Creative design and layout support for online publication, particularly layout, design, and typesetting for electronic publication.
• Produce products based on the content and guidance provided by the hiring unit for each assignment ensuring effective conveyance of the textual content to target audiences while in full compliance with UNDP branding and style guide.
• Note on intellectual property:
All information and production of video pertaining to the assignments as well as outputs produced under this contract shall remain the property of the UNDP who shall have exclusive rights over their use. The products shall not be disclosed to the public nor used in whatever format without written permission of UNDP in line with the national and International Copyright Laws applicable.
