Position description

International Crisis Group (Crisis Group) seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated Development Associate to join our Development department. The Associate will be responsible for fulfilling a key cross-functional support role that will include preparing funding proposals and reports for donors, conducting prospect research, and supporting day-to-day activities across the Foundations and Philanthropy departments. The Associate will report to the Director of Foundation Relations and will work collaboratively with the Foundations and Philanthropy teams to advance our shared goals.

 

Responsibilities:

Support with written materials (70%):

  • Lead and contribute to the preparation of donor reports and associated supplementary materials, including gathering input from relevant teams (e.g., Communications, Programs, Advocacy) and drafting content on specific regions or topics;

  • Maintain and update data on grant/project activities for donor reporting;

  • Compile initial drafts and/or assist in the development of grant proposals and concept note packages for donors and prospects. This may include collaborating with colleagues from Programs, Advocacy, Finance and other divisions in the preparation of materials;

  • Feed into other written products such as newsletters, brochures, year end notes/appeals, prospect/donor outreach emails, impact notes and other collateral, as assigned.

     

Prospect & Donor Research (25%):

  • Utilise a range of prospecting tools including i-wave, 990s, annual reports, philanthropy databases, philanthropy and traditional media news sources, etc., to research and prepare profiles, reports and briefs on high-net-worth individuals and institutional foundations who have the strategic alignment and capacity to make gifts/grants to Crisis Group;

  • Support on other research products including network mapping to identify potential connectors among staff, trustees and other partners and due diligence to ensure philanthropic relationships and commitments align with Crisis Group’s mission and values;

  • Organise and manage research products including research records/profiles, biographical profiles and other data, as required.

 

Ad hoc (5%):

  • Ad hoc tasks as needed, such as: support with talking points, briefers, team strategies, metrics, internal situation reports and other related materials.

 

Qualifications

Strong candidates will have an interest in playing an essential support function with a larger development team, as well as an understanding or willingness to learn about fundraising. They will also possess the following skills and characteristics:

 

  • Outstanding writing skills with the ability to collect and synthesise complex information from a variety of sources;

  • Ability to craft compelling content that conveys the urgency and relevancy of our work, as well as illustrates our impact;

  • Excellent research and analytical skills, with strong attention to detail and critical thinking abilities;

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, often across time zones, to prioritise a large volume of tasks with concurrent deadlines;

  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexible attitude and willingness to adapt to organisational needs and priorities while maintaining deadlines;

  • A working knowledge of fundraising software and tools as well as Google Workspace; or a willingness to learn;

  • 1-3 years of proven experience providing support to development-related functions (research, reports, proposals, donor outreach, etc);

  • A university degree in international relations, conflict studies or related fields is desirable.

Some travel, including internationally, and occasional work on nights and weekends may be required.

 

The position will be based out of our London office. Please note, Crisis Group is unable to sponsor a work permit for this position and authorisation to work in the United Kingdom is required. Crisis Group maintains a flexible working environment that includes on-site and hybrid work arrangements.
