Development & Outreach Department and Advocacy Department Internship

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an intern for the Stockholm office, assisting the Development & Outreach and Advocacy Departments. The internship is full-time (35 hours per week) and will be for 20 weeks, starting in early September 2025. The internship is unpaid, and interns must be enrolled university students for the full duration of the internship.

This internship suits those who are interested in developing their experience within a global human rights organization, within a national country office. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities related to human rights and learn how the organization operates through communication, advocacy, fundraising, outreach and events. HRW interns have unique opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, special events relating to human rights, and network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, you will be able to use the skills and knowledge you have acquired during your studies and apply these in a professional environment. HRW’s Stockholm team sits at Norrsken House, located in central Stockholm.

Specific tasks may vary based on the interest and abilities of the selected intern. Some of the main tasks include (but are not limited to):

  • Monitoring global developments and assisting in preparing relevant materials to support HRW’s advocacy work;
  • Contributing in planning, organizing, and evaluating events;
  • Participating in briefings with decision-makers and other key stakeholders;
  • Supporting the fundraising team by researching potential sources of income, such as foundations and corporate partners;
  • Assisting in spreading HRW’s research and recommendations by creating targeted communications for both decision-makers and the general public; and
  • Participating in developing content for HRW Sweden’s digital channels, including social media, newsletters, and the website.

Qualifications:

  • Interns in Sweden must be an enrolled student for the duration of their internship term.
  • Coursework in a relevant area such as communications, media, political science, law or human rights is preferred, but we are open to other profiles as well.
  • Applicants should be well-organized, creative, curious, flexible, and detail- oriented with excellent time management skills and a willingness to learn.
  • Experience with collaborating within a team is desirable.
  • The ideal candidate enjoys writing and has a good ability to express themselves in written and oral communication in both Swedish and English, and has a demonstrated interest in human rights, communication, social media, and/or fundraising.
  • Good knowledge of the MS Office programs Word and Excel are highly valuable. Candidates are encouraged to apply, even if you do not fit the suggested background above.
