HUN-REN – the Hungarian Research Network is Hungary’s flagship national research organisation and a central pillar of its research and innovation ecosystem. HUN-REN comprises 15 research institutions with more than 5,000 employees, including approximately 3,400 researchers, working across a wide range of scientific disciplines of STEM, LIFE and frontier sciences. The HUN-REN Institute for Nuclear Research (HUN-REN ATOMKI) is one of HUN-REN’s research institutions (see below more).

Following the adoption of the Act on HUN-REN by the Hungarian Parliament in December 2024, HUN-REN – established as the network of the former research institutions of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences – was further strengthened in 2025. This enhanced its research autonomy and institutional independence as a unified national research and innovation network operating outside the state system, while continuing to perform public research and innovation tasks and to receive state funding within a pre-planned, performance-based, and predictable framework.
Building on Hungary’s long tradition of scientific excellence and internationally recognised achievements, HUN-REN is undergoing a strategic renewal aimed at positioning the Network among the world’s leading research organisations and reinforcing Hungary’s role as a dynamic hub for internationally collaborative scientific discovery and innovation. The pillars of HUN-REN are scientific excellence measured by international standards, academic freedom, and a commitment to serving science, society, and the future of Hungary. Its scientific strategy aligns with Hungary’s research and innovation agenda, the John von Neumann Programme, which prioritises four key areas: digital transformation and artificial intelligence; health and life sciences; sustainable environment and energy; and safety and security.
HUN-REN is led by a President with an internationally recognised academic profile, while day-to-day operations are managed by a Chief Executive Officer with an internationally recognised corporate leadership background. Strategic oversight and decision-making are entrusted to a seven-member Governing Board, chaired by the President. The majority of its members are active participants in the international scientific community, while the others bring recognised experience in innovation.
The 15 research institutions of HUN-REN operate as independent legal entities under Hungarian Law, each with its own organisational structure, budget and leadership while forming an integrated network and operating within its overarching framework of HUN-REN. These institutions are led by Directors-Generals, appointed by the President of HUN-REN with the consent of the Governing Board following an international call. Directors-General play a key role in the effective operation and performance of the Network (see more bellow).

The HUN-REN Institute for Nuclear Research (HUN-REN ATOMKI) is one of the HUN-REN’s 15 research institutions.
HUN-REN ATOMKI is a leading European centre for advanced research in nuclear, atomic, molecular and particle physics. HUN-REN ATOMKI – founded in 1954, in Debrecen, Hungary’s second largest city – conducts high impact experimental and theoretical investigations aimed at elucidating the fundamental structure, interactions and dynamical behaviour of matter. Its research portfolio spans both curiosity-driven discovery science and mission-oriented applied physics, supported by cutting-edge instrumentation and unique laboratory capabilities.
Building on its core strengths in accelerator‑based nuclear and atomic physics, HUN-REN ATOMKI develops state‑of‑the‑art methods and technologies that enable breakthrough research across multiple scientific domains in line with HUN-REN’s strategic objectives. These include materials science and diagnostics, earth and environmental sciences, space and astrophysical studies, as well as medical, biological and cultural‑heritage research.
HUN-REN ATOMKI’s extensive research infrastructure and capabilities include experimental nuclear physics laboratories and high-precision measurement environments supporting accelerator- and detector-based experimental research, and a dedicated unit focusing on isotope-based environmental and climate research that are all made available for international partners.
HUN-REN ATOMKI is already well-integrated into European research infrastructure networks (e.g. the institute is the Hungarian consortium leader of the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) and the European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS)) and participates in collaborations with leading international institutes, such as the RIKEN Nishina Centre in Japan, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and several Helmholtz centres. HUN-REN ATOMKI also coordinates the Hungarian Space Chemistry Research Network, providing experimental platforms for astrochemical and space-environment modelling.
HUN-REN ATOMKI currently employs around 200 staff, including more than 110 researchers across all career stages.
The seat of HUN-REN ATOMKI is Debrecen, a major scientific hub in Hungary that supports the Institute’s long-term growth through its strong university and knowledge ecosystem, as well as its international connections. The city’s resources foster interdisciplinary collaboration, linking research, education, and innovation. Through its joint department with the University of Debrecen, HUN-REN ATOMKI contributes to teaching and doctoral training, strengthening its scientific profile and enabling the rapid integration of new research results into academic programmes.

ABOUT THE FORMAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE APPLICANT
Applicants for the position of Director General of HUN-REN ATOMKI should be internationally recognised scientists or scholars with an outstanding academic record and proven leadership experience. The ideal candidate will bring strategic vision and the ability to lead a complex research organisation in a competitive global environment.
The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record in a relevant area of the physical sciences. Suitable scientific backgrounds include research and development in physics, nuclear physics, particle physics, atomic and molecular physics, astronomy or astrophysics. Candidates with internationally recognised contributions, demonstrated leadership in experimental or theoretical programmes, and experience in advancing major research infrastructures or collaborations are particularly encouraged to apply.

Expected evaluation period: 3-5 months
Expected start date: no later than 1 January 2027
Selection process: Applicants who pass the preliminary screening will be informed of the detailed evaluation procedure. It includes a review by a scientific committee, followed by an evaluation phase involving distinguished international scientists. The final decision will be made by the President of HUN-REN, exercising employer’s rights, following consultation with the Governing Board of HUN-REN.
Language requirements: Please submit the application documents in either Hungarian or English language. If the documents are submitted in Hungarian and the applicant proceeds to the evaluation phase involving international members of the selection committee, submission of the application documentation in English within one week upon request is a condition for participation in the selection process. The language of the interviews will be Hungarian or English; however, a high level of English language proficiency is required.
