Wounds Canada, a charitable organization devoted to improving the lives of Canadians at risk for or with wounds, is currently seeking an outstanding individual eager to join our team on a full-time basis as Director of Communications.

Reporting to the CEO, you will help create a communications strategy and budget and be responsible for executing the strategy. You will lead and mentor a communications team that provides meaningful communication to our various audiences: patients and their care partners, health-care professionals, policy makers/administrators, the public, government decision makers and donors. You are a creative problem solver who will help us increase awareness of our organization, promote our key messages, protect our brand, ensure Canadians have the information they need to prevent and manage wounds, and support our fundraising efforts. This will be achieved through our networks and various media, including print and digital media (websites, social media, videos); enewsletters; our magazine and journal; reports and other publications; educational materials; brochures; media releases; briefs; proposals; and advocacy, partner, member and donor communications.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Be an active member of the senior management team and contribute to organizational leadership, strategic planning and review
  • Develop, implement and manage the organization’s communications strategy
  • Protect organizational reputation and identity
  • Direct and oversee the implementation of all communications-related deliverables by leading the communications team in the production of:
  • Advocacy communications
  • Fundraising communications
  • Social media communications
  • Website updates
  • Educational resources
  • Marketing materials
  • Reports
  • General communications
  • Applications for grant funding
  • Other materials as required
  • Support the Editor, Major Publications, in the production and promotion of Wound Care Canada, Limb Preservation and Foundations of Best Practice for Skin and Wound Management
  • Develop and maintain a national network of topic-expert contributors
  • Oversee media relations, including the development and maintenance of relationships with journalists and influencers
  • Provide editorial expertise as required
  • Conduct communications effectiveness monitoring and analysis
  • Attend designated meetings with staff, board and external stakeholders

Qualifications

You have:

  • A university degree (preferably master’s) in English, journalism, communications, public relations or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in leading communications programs, including strategic communications planning and implementation
  • Superior communication skills (writing, all types of editing, interviewing) across a variety of media
  • Proven ability to manage the development and production of high-quality communication products from conception through production and distribution while optimizing content for digital and social channels
  • Experience overseeing the work of graphic designers and digital producers
  • Experience in profile building
  • Experience in reputation and brand management
  • Demonstrated ability in managing relationships, including mentoring and leading direct reports, supporting internal and external contributors, and collaborating effectively with internal team members and the board of directors
  • Collaborative and curious mindset
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate in writing and in person key concepts using language appropriate to Wounds Canada’s varied audiences.
  • Experience in developing connections with Canadian media and social media influencers
  • Excellent judgement, discretion, integrity and professionalism
  • A high degree of creativity
  • The ability to function at a high level of productivity in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven success in managing many projects simultaneously
  • Facility in common business, digital and publication production software programs
  • Experience working for not-for-profit/charitable organizations

Other Considerations

  • We work in a virtual environment and will have occasional face-to-face meetings and events when it becomes safe to do so.
  • You must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Some travel is required.
