ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Liberal Arts is one of twenty-three departments at SAIC. Liberal Arts provides the academic foundation for undergraduate students’ success at SAIC. The department is chaired by a full-time faculty member with 15 full-time faculty and over 100 part-time faculty. It offers 400 courses each year, primarily to undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art. Liberal Arts’ main credit areas include First Year Seminar, Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Science, Foreign Languages, English for International Students, and the Academic Access Program.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Director of EIS is critically important to managing and developing both the curriculum of English for International Students and the cohort of faculty who deliver these courses. The Director ensures consistency and quality outcomes across courses and provides leadership in stewarding curriculum development and the assessment of student learning goals. Working closely with the Chair of the Liberal Arts Department, the Director of International Affairs, and the Deans of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, the Director of EIS is responsible for the design and implementation of a comprehensive EIS Program. 

Approximately 120 international students are engaged in EIS courses each year. An estimated 10-12 teaching faculty will require orientation to the course, access to faculty Canvas resources, assessment and general support.

The Director of EIS is a 12 month half-time staff administrative position with an additional position as a Lecturer faculty with a teaching load of two courses per academic year in the EIS Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of EIS supervises all teaching faculty with regard to pedagogic orientation, course support, assessment of student learning, syllabus development, course evaluation, and co-curricular event planning. The Director liaises with Academic Advising and Admissions to ensure that the Program meets student needs.

Administrative work unique to EIS:

  • Support placement of international students and oversee confirmation testing
  • Develop and implement EIS curriculum
  • Develop academic year, winter and summer course schedules
  • Hire, supervise, and orient EIS faculty
  • Teach 2 classes per academic year, or its equivalent, as approved by the Dean of Faculty in consultation with the Chair of Liberal Arts
  • Coordinate tutoring program for graduate International students
  • Oversee the development and implementation of an on-going assessment program to monitor the effectiveness of the program
  • Maintain records and reports to track individual student progress in EIS, academic and studio classes
  • Work closely with the Director of Academic Advising and with the Director of the Disability and Learning Resource Center to assure students seek appropriate support services
  • Participate in planning meetings and maintain regular communication with International Affairs, Liberal Arts, Academic Advising, Residence Life, Student Affairs, Contemporary Practices and Admissions
  • Develop and oversee the annual $11,000 EIS budget ensuring institutional policy and process is adhered to
  • Represents the EIS at various institution-wide planning meetings and working groups as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting.
  • To stand or sit for prolonged periods of time (at the choice of the employee); to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light amounts of weight (less than 30 lbs.);
  • To operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard
  • To verbally communicate to exchange information

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, Education, Rhetoric, Composition and Literacy, or similar field required
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in teaching and program administration preferred
  • Certification in ESL (English as a Second Language) and/or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) preferred
  • We are looking for expertise in the areas of language teaching and assessment, as well as materials and curriculum development for English Language Learners (ELLs).
  • A knowledge of art and art history is desirable.
