This position is for our Atrium Health Pineville Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. Come be a part of our team which is comprised of highly experienced surgeons committed to delivering exceptional care to treat patients with unscheduled urgent, emergent, and complex surgical diseases. 

Atrium Health is one of the largest, most comprehensive, and integrated, public, not-for-profit systems in the nation compromising more than 7,500 licensed beds, employing nearly 70,000 people and accounting for more than 12 million patient encounters annually. The Section of General Surgery in the Department of Surgery performs elective general surgery cases and covers emergency general surgery services at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, Atrium Health Mercy, and Atrium Health Pineville. 

Atrium Health Pineville is a 235-bed acute care hospital located 8.7 miles from Carolinas Medical Center Main Campus in Southeast Charlotte. Atrium Health Pineville provides comprehensive 24/7 care for complex and critically ill patients including a 30 bed ICU, interventional radiology, comprehensive gastrointestinal services, and surgical subspecialists.

Job Summary 

The APP will function in the inpatient and outpatient care for acute and chronically ill surgical patients. Additional core functions include surgical first assistant in the operating room, comanaging the inpatient service, and staffing an APP post-operative clinic. Common operative procedures performed include laparoscopic and open surgeries for biliary, gastrointestinal, hernia and soft tissue disorders. The position is 7 days on service, 7 days off. The APP would preferably have the experience and background to independently initiate and follow through on the assessment and workup of emergency general surgical patients. 

Essential Functions

  • Performs initial and periodic medical history and physical examinations. 
  • Records findings of examinations, assessments, and plan of care. 
  • Assist with new consults and admissions. 
  • Daily assessment of intensive care, progressive, and floor patients 
  • Assist in positioning, skin preparation, and draping of the patient. 
  • Determine treatment plans for complex and high-risk patients in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team and consultants. 
  • Writes appropriate prescriptions.
  • Orders and interprets daily laboratory and radiology examinations. 
  • Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner in the patient’s electronic medical record. 
  • Attends, participates in, and contributes to group practice meetings and development of standard procedures for Pineville General Surgery service and Department of surgery. 
  • Participates in evidence-based research and publishing initiatives focused on quality improvement in the care of emergency general surgery patients.
  • Candidates should be committed to excellence in patient care, medical education, and leadership.

Qualifications

Must have or be eligible for a DEA license. Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in North Carolina. Eligible for prescriptive authority application through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board in NC required. BLS for Healthcare Provider from AHA required with expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice. Demonstrates appropriate critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize and make proactive decisions. Relative acute experience or surgical background is preferred. 

NP: master’s degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice required. License to practice as a Registered Nurse required. Certification in the area of practice from a nationally recognized certifying body required. ACNP or AGACNP board certification required based population served.

PA: Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program required; master’s degree preferred. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants preferred.
