The Teaching and Learning Center at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Education Developer/Faculty Developer, STEM Focus.

The WVU Teaching and Learning Center is seeking an Educational / Faculty Developer to serve as a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) leader. The ideal candidate should have a strong focus on developing faculty, instructors, and graduate teaching assistants within STEM academic disciplines. This position is on the campus of West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV.

Please note that we are conducting two searches: 1) Educational Developer / Faculty Developer – STEM Focus (requisition #25149); and 2) Educational Developer / Faculty Developer – Liberal Arts Focus (requisition #25148). About the Opportunity

The Educational Developer – STEM Focus will be responsible for serving those who teach within the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, the Davis College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the John Chambers College of Business and Economics, the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, and those teaching in other schools and colleges throughout the university.

Reporting to the Administrative Director of the Teaching and Learning Center, Educational Developers plan and facilitate event programming such as workshops, faculty learning communities, multi-day signature programs, and orientations. The Teaching and Learning Center provides a range of support services, including one-on-one consultations with Educational Developers, small groups facilitated by Educational Developers, and support in the peer review of teaching. Educational Developers also work with faculty, instructors, and graduate teaching assistants to provide support and encourage the development and dissemination of SoTL projects.

Responsibilities of Educational Developers include: 10% Teaching (3 credit hours in-load per year); 10% Scholarship (peer reviewed publications and conference presentations); 80% Service (service to the Teaching and Learning Center and WVU community; external service to the profession).

What You’ll Do

  • Impact teaching across West Virginia University by fostering relationships with those who teach, sharing research-based practices on effective teaching, and amplifying recognition of effective teaching practices happening at WVU.
  • Conduct needs assessments and make data-informed decisions on workshop offerings, signature programs, and support services for WVU faculty, instructors, and graduate teaching assistants.
  • Teach 3 credit hours in-load per year.
  • Maintain an active research agenda in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and/or Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER), support faculty in the production and dissemination of SoTL and/or DBER, and model effective SoTL and/or DBER practices for the WVU community.
  • Promote, maintain, and model the use of center resources such as labs, studios, equipment, and the center’s experimental teaching spaces.
  • Develop social media, newsletter, and email listserv content promoting center events, teaching resources, and highlighting effective teaching practices happening across WVU.
  • Collaborate with center associates and colleagues across all WVU campuses, including those in Keyser and Beckley.
  • Assist in duties related to the annual teaching conference.
  • Assist in duties related to new faculty orientation and graduate teaching assistant orientation.
  • Provide external service to professional associations and consortia related to educational development and effective teaching.
  • Serve on committees and working groups related to teaching across WVU as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About the Position

This is a 12-month Faculty Equivalent / Academic Professional (FE/AP) appointment with an in-load teaching expectation of 3 credit hours per year.

As funding allows, candidates selected to join the WVU Teaching and Learning Center:

  • Receive funds to cover the cost of your professional association dues in the POD Network.
  • Receive funds to cover the cost of conference registration for your own professional development in teaching and educational development.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate or terminal degree (e.g., Master of Fine Arts) in the candidate’s discipline, which is needed to serve as an instructor at WVU
  • Ability to demonstrate an emerging research agenda within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and/or Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER)
  • A minimum of four (4) years of teaching experience of teaching experience at the university level, with at least two years as an instructor of record
  • Prior experience supporting those who teach, specifically through the facilitation of workshops, orientations, one-on-one consultations, or communities of inquiry on teaching

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active research agenda within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and/or Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER)
  • Five (5) or more years of teaching experience as an instructor of record
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in supporting those who teach — across the career lifespan — through workshops, signature programs, retreats, learning communities, and the development of SoTL and/or DBER projects
  • Active record of external service to professional associations dedicated to educational, organizational, or faculty development
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence and scholarly dissemination of the candidate’s own effective teaching practices through peer reviewed journals and/or peer reviewed conference presentations.

Expectations of Candidate Finalists

Finalists invited for a campus visit will be asked to prepare a research talk and a teaching demonstration. Information on the expectations for each appears below.

  • 45-minute Research talk: Candidates are asked to share their selected works within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (or Discipline-Based Educational Research) and facilitate audience Q&A. Selected works may be published, previously presented, or works in progress.
  • 60-minute Teaching Demonstration: Candidates are asked to teach a workshop, on a topic of the candidate’s choice, suitable for one of the audiences served by the WVU Teaching and Learning Center. Workshops should showcase the candidate’s skills in conducting active, participant-focused educational development programming.
