JOB DESCRIPTION

The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its Risk Office (RO) – Transaction & Mandate Risk Division (T&MR) – Credit Risk Unit (CR) at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a (Senior) Credit Risk Officer *.

This is a full-time temporary position (travel required) at grade 4/5. Appointment will be made on the basis of three (3) years fixed-term assignment

Purpose

Part of the EIB Group, the mission of the European Investment Fund (EIF) is to improve access to finance for SMEs and small mid-caps in Europe. We do this by supporting emerging and established fund managers with equity investments and by designing debt financing instruments that share the risk taken by financial institutions when they lend to or invest in small businesses. We bring this support closer to entrepreneurs through our extensive network of partners and financial intermediaries in all EU Member States and associated countries.

Operating network

The Credit Risk Unit, is in charge of the initial appraisal of portfolio guarantee, direct loan and securitisation transactions. The Unit cooperates with Investment Office and Legal Services.

Responsibilities

At a level commensurate with your experience and seniority, you will be responsible of:

Supporting the development, back testing and integration of the BMvX project from a users’ perspective.

Reviewing and approving transactions, providing risk assessment and expert opinions.

Conducting counterparty due diligence.

Reviewing all relevant legal documentation to ensure alignment with internal standards

Providing expert advice and recommend risk mitigation measures related to transaction structure, documentation, portfolio, and data quality.

Using credit risk models to evaluate the financial risk associated with specific transactions or mandates, including scenario analysis and quantitative financial assessment.

Analysing quantitative or conceptual problems, collecting and interpreting data, and communicate data-driven insights and conclusions.

Overseeing the progression of transactions from approval to signatures ensuring all risk aspects are addressed.

Conducting detailed analysis of new transactions, evaluating their suitability and alignment with mandate and organizational goals, while identifying financial, credit, operational, and other potential risks.

Qualifications

At least three years and no more than five of post-graduation (after having obtained your initial university diploma) relevant professional experience at the same level of responsibility.

University degree in a quantitative field like Mathematics, Physics or Finance, other degrees may be considered if the candidate can demonstrate a strong quantitative background

Confident use of Excel at an advanced level.

Familiarity with tools like SQL, Python, or VBA would be an advantage.

Strong experience in analysis of Securitisations, SME debt portfolios, RMBS (Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities), structured finance and project finance.

Fluent spoken and written English as well as excellent drafting skills are essential for the role; working knowledge/fluency in other EU languages would be an advantage.

Understanding of the EIF’s operational framework is an advantage.

Technical Competencies

Ability to deliver well-documented, objective written opinions on proposed transactions and mandates by conducting thorough credit and financial analyses. This includes critically reviewing and quality-proofing transactions and mandates proposals, identifying key issues, and advising senior management to ensure informed decision-making and adherence to organizational standards.

Ability to provide expert advice and proposed mitigating measures (recommendations or conditions precedent) on a wide range of risk related matters related to the structure, documentation, portfolio or data quality of the transactions.

Ability to use and adapt risk models to evaluate the financial risk associated with specific transactions or mandates. This includes deriving the relevant inputs of the model, running different scenarios and sensitivities as well as changing structural features and interpretating the model results. It requires using quantitative models and financial analysis.

Ability to review quantitative or conceptual problems or situations, collect data and apply scientific methods to analyse it. Ability to identify the most significant data points and themes, communicate data insights and draw data-driven conclusions.

Take a proactive approach to suggesting credit mitigation strategies, enhancing analytical tools and models.

Ability to review legal documents related to transactions, identify key points that may affect financial aspects, and provide an initial analysis and summary for further review.
