Electronic delocalization in organometallic molecules

nearmejobs.eu

A project exploring the electronic properties of organometallic molecules is available in the Peeks and Field groups at UNSW.

We are exploring the properties and applications of π-conjugated organometallic molecules, with a particular interest in learning how the incorporation of metal atoms can stabilize unusual patterns of bonding in p-conjugated molecules, and how this affects molecules’ electronic properties. Aside from fundamental insight, such molecules have potential applicants in electronics (e.g. single molecule wires), light-harvesting, and biology (dyes). The core goal of this project is to uncover new fundamental chemistry concepts around electronic delocalization.

This project will give you the opportunity to develop your skills in organometallic synthesis, advanced spectroscopy (NMR, UV-vis, FT-IR), and computational chemistry (DFT). We welcome applicants with all interests, but synthetic chemistry experience is essential.

We hope for successful candidates to begin their study between July and September 2025, but this can be negotiated.

Essential experience or interest:

  • Must have an interest or experience in using air-free synthesis techniques (Schlenk line, glovebox).
  • Must have (or be in the process of developing) experience of scientific writing, demonstrated either by an Honours/Masters thesis which reflects ~9 months of research activity, or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Must have at least 9 months of experience working on a synthetic (organic or inorganic) chemistry research project, or currently be working on a project which is expected to last for at least 9 months.
  • Must meet UNSW’s English language requirements.

Preferred experience:

  • Experience or interest in spectroscopy and/or computational chemistry.
  • Experience of team-working.
  • Experience of problem-solving.

The criteria above are not intended to dissuade applicants who are currently enrolled in Honours or Masters programs and who will meet the requirements at the conclusion of their current programs.

The project will be based in the UNSW School of Chemistry, which features excellent facilities and spectroscopic equipment.

Personal development is a defining characteristic of a PhD programme. You will build technical and professional skills through meaningful research and collaboration.

Contact Dr Martin Peeks for more information.

To express interest, send a copy of your CV, a cover letter which addresses the selection criteria, and details of 2-3 referees to (mention this project’s title in your email). Early enquiries and applications are encouraged. Applications will be reviewed on and after 10th January 2025.

Your CV should include your university GPA.
