Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Schools, the Dual Immersion Elementary School Principal will provide leadership and supervision in administering the educational program of the Elementary School. This role entails promoting the educational development and achievement of students in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law. This position will provide leadership in program development and improvement, as well as in professional staff development with a special emphasis on dual language immersion programming. The principal is also responsible for developing a positive and inclusive school culture that celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and administers school programs consistent with Granite School District goals and objectives, with an emphasis on dual language immersion program goals.
  • Provides leadership and direction to elementary school staff with regard to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of educational programs, including curricular and extracurricular activities, specifically in regard to dual language immersion programming.
  • Promotes a school environment that is safe and conducive to individualized instruction, cooperative curriculum development, and student learning, with sensitivity to the needs of dual language learners.
  • Ensures that Board policies and procedures are implemented and followed at the elementary school.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field, particularly in dual language immersion education, by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Encourages staff to continue to grow professionally and to experiment with new approaches or strategies to teaching in a dual language immersion setting.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and reporting for all student activities, attendance, and records as required by law.
  • Coordinates the work of the elementary school staff and Granite School District program leaders to develop and implement instructional programs and teaching practices aligned with dual language immersion methodologies.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning in both program languages, and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students’ needs, including students with special needs.
  • Coordinates with the central office in recruitment and selection of employees, the proper maintenance of employee personnel files, the administration of collective bargaining agreements, corrective action, and other human resource issues.
  • Organizes and conducts regular meetings with teachers for continuing development of instructional techniques specific to dual language immersion programs.
  • Involves staff in the evaluation of programs and the planning of new programs, with a focus on maintaining and improving the dual language immersion program.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents in ways that are accessible and culturally sensitive.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school’s standards and Granite School District policies.
  • Supervises and evaluates teaching staff and other building employees in accordance with the school district’s evaluation plan, and makes recommendations regarding goals, areas needing improvement and continued employment.
  • Organizes and manages the budgetary and financial affairs of the elementary school consistent with Granite School District policies.
  • Attend state and district DLI meetings for administrators (including training for new administrators)
  • Work with state and district DLI leaders

Non-Essential Functions

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
  • Required Knowledge and SkillsKnowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles and behavioral management methods, with a focus on dual language immersion best practices.
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts, including dual language immersion curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation and staff supervision, with an emphasis on dual language immersion programs.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans, particularly related to monitoring and improving dual language program effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education, including those pertaining to English Language Learners and dual language immersion programs.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to develop and implement projects.
  • Working knowledge of language acquisition process. (ESL, DLI, or MLL program)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents, including those from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work
  • Required Education, Training and QualificationsMinimum of a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Hold current Administrative/Supervisory License
  • Requires a Utah State Board of Education cleared criminal background check
  • Required Prior ExperienceA minimum of five years of successful teaching experience at the elementary level, preferably in more than one subject area and grade level.
  • Successful school based administrative experience.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in Spanish preferred.
  • Administrative and/or teaching experience in a dual immersion school that utilizes the Utah DLI model.
  • Assigned Decision MakingMakes decisions concerning the best way to accomplish tasks assigned. Needs to be able to motivate people to work cooperatively and efficiently as a team. Must be able to handle emergencies as they arise. Must take direction well and be able to work within specific guidelines. Make suggestions but must be willing to follow directions.

Non-Supervisory Interaction

  • Interacts and collaborates with employees, board members, patrons, vendors, administrators and secretaries in schools.
  • Works with various department secretaries, coordinators, managers and directors.
  • Works positively and collaboratively with Granite School District departments including administrators and secretaries.
  • Works with employees for certifications of time worked.
  • Interacts with community partners to implement programming and secure donations for program student incentives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills along with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people.
  • Able to create and support a team-based environment within the program and department.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Provides supervision to assigned elementary schools.

Budget Responsibility

  • Responsible for management and accountability of various elementary school budgets.

Working Environment

  • Work takes place in a typical school environment.
  • Supervision of students requires both indoor and outdoor responsibilities (e.g. recess duty, gymnasium activities, etc.) in all types of weather and air quality.
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
