Engineering Virus-Like Particles for Next-Generation Vaccine Manufacturing

nearmejobs.eu

Virus-like particles (VLPs) are structures typically composed of viral structural proteins that self-assemble into virus-like structures. VLPs are particularly useful because they mimic the outer shell or capsid of a virus, and retain the ability to trigger an immune response without the risks associated with live or inactivated viruses. Because they lack viral genetic material, they cannot replicate or cause disease in the host. This makes them a safe and effective platform for vaccine development. In this project, the candidate will apply state-of-the-art protein engineering strategies to develop VLPs with enhanced stability and antigen loading capacity. The candidate will also use advanced light scattering techniques to characterize native and engineered VLPs.

During the project, the candidate will receive training at the interface of engineering and biological sciences. The candidate will gain expertise in the areas of protein science, particle science, and analytical science. The candidate will also benefit from the resources, support, and training from the Engineering Graduate School, the Faculty and the Departmental Employability Teams, allowing the candidate to develop themselves into a future leader in bioeconomy.

This PhD project sits within the UK-South East Asia Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub (UK-SEA Vax Hub), funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Under the leadership of the University of Sheffield, the UK-SEA Vax Hub comprises four esteemed UK academic institutions and collaborates with 12 partners from South-East Asian countries. Distinguished by its multidisciplinary expertise in vaccine research and manufacturing, the hub serves as a dynamic platform for scientific innovation. The successful candidate will become an integral member of a highly skilled team of researchers within the hub, contributing to the development of cutting-edge solutions in the field of vaccine manufacturing.
