At a Glance! The ELL Part-time Faculty will teach the English language to diverse groups of students attending classes together in a competency based program. We are committed to building a culturally diverse and culturally competent faculty and are looking for a collaborative team member with a commitment to equity that will help foster a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness. Below are rates for the 24-25 academic year:

  • Lecture rate is $78.33 per contact hour ($861.63 per credit).
  • Lab rate is $58.33 per contact hour ($1,283.26 per credit).
  • Field-based experience rate is $42.37 per contact hour ($1,398.21 per credit).

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

  • Impart expertise, enthusiasm and creativity in teaching English language courses.
  • Lead with equity by creating an equitable learning environment that supports success for all students.
  • Teach English contextualized in subjects required for a high school diploma to immigrant and international students
  • Offer outcomes-based instruction and utilize a curriculum that incorporates the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS).
  • Teach and interact effectively with staff and students of various cultural, ethnic, generational and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Identify and mitigate barriers to success that many students face
  • Apply current theories and research on teaching/learning styles, collaborative learning, assessment, and multicultural education
  • Provide effective classroom management, including navigating challenging conversations
  • Utilize technology to provide engaging and innovative language learning experiences
  • Promote innovative learning experiences with professional-technical programs, cross-disciplinary team teaching, and integration with other LCC programs
  • Participate in ongoing instructional assessment, using current field-specific research findings, data, and educational techniques to develop/modify course content
  • Work with students to develop personal, academic and career goals and provide instruction and assessment enabling the student to enter a college program, obtain or retain employment, earn a high school diploma, equivalency certificate, or complete other identified goals.
  • Provide individualized support to promote student success.
  • Proctor CASAS tests as needed; using diagnostic tools to foster academic advancement
  • Maintain availability outside of class time for student consultation.
  • Maintain and submit student records, documentation and program reports.
  • Participate in department and college activities, meetings and recruitment opportunities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA) in English Language Learning, TESOL; OR related discipline or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • A commitment to apply the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion as they relate to teaching, student support, and curriculum development
  • Ability to teach in a variety of modalities including; face-to-face, hybrid, and online

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s (MA) in English Language Learning, TESOL; OR related discipline
  • Experience teaching ELL in a higher education environment
  • Experience working with high school aged youth, adults, and diverse, systemically marginalized people in a community college, university or high school setting
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, learning management systems, and other appropriate instructional technologies to maximize student success outcomes
  • Experience applying instructional approaches for non-native English speakers
  • Experience with assessment and teaching approaches in the field of math including CASAS, IBEST, and the College and Career Readiness Standards
  • Familiarity with the K-12 education system and high school transcript evaluation
  • Experience teaching and developing coursework online

Adjunct faculty must work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible, benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered by the Public Employees Benefits Board. Participation in one of the retirement plans is mandatory. The two plans are the State Board Retirement Plan administered through TIAA-CREF and TRS Plan 3 through the Department of Retirement Systems. Adjuncts who teach at other Washington State Community & Technical colleges and are actively contributing to retirement there may contribute to retirement at LCC.

Paid Leave

Adjunct faculty employed on adjunct and/or quarterly contracts shall earn sick leave based on their contracted FTE multiplied by seven (7) for each month they are in active teaching status. 

Adjunct academic employees shall have four (4) days of personal leave available from July 1 through June 30. No more than (2) days may be used per quarter. Adjunct faculty also receive paid jury duty leave.

Tuition Waiver

For interested adjunct employees that are eligible for benefits (teaching more than 50% of full-time as indicated above), LCC offers $10 classes. State employees also qualify for tuition discounts with other various colleges and universities across the state (RCW 28B.15.558).

Red Devil Wellbeing is LCC’s employee wellness program that strives to help employees improve and maintain their wellbeing enabling them to live healthier and more fulfilling lives. 

On-site Childcare Center

The Early Learning Center is a state licensed program that offers high quality childcare for children ages 1 month through kindergarten entry to students, staff and faculty. The center is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The program is a participant of the Washington State Early Achievers quality rating and improvement system and rated a level 4-Quality Level of Excellence. Our teachers are trained in the Early Childhood Education field.

Social Security

All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
